Worry and What to Do about It
by Ernest Angley
February 2000
Do you ever get worried? Do you ever have times of misgivings, moments when the spirit of worry suddenly closes in? If so, that’s the time to stop and think, the time to take on the thoughts of God. In the Word of God you will find many thoughts you can use to lift you out of your worries.
Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you (I Peter 5:7) . When that spirit of worry floods in, get ready to cast it upon the Lord. Cast means to throw: You throw your cares on Him. Don’t beg the Lord to take them; don’t wait for Him to ask for them: Follow the instructions in the Word of God, and cast your cares on Him.
The Lord doesn’t want you to worry; worry isn’t faith and faith isn’t worry. God cannot work through worry; He works through faith, faith that is a gift from Him. God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith (Romans 12:3). God never has told us in the Scripture that worry is a gift. No, worry doesn’t come from God.
Before sin entered Adam and Eve, they had no idea what worry was. They lived with God in a wonderful Eden. Today there is a wonderful spiritual Eden here on Earth, a dwelling place for all who yield completely to the Lord. Into your innermost being, Jesus comes to live and dine with you in this wonderful spiritual Eden.
Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled
Worry affects the body, causes sicknesses and diseases, robs you of the sleep and rest you need. Worry throws a great strain on the body. Many people have worried themselves into an early grave, destroyed themselves with worry. Instead of worrying, let God’s promises cancel out worry.
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me (John 14:1). Jesus is saying: Believe me. Don’t let your heart be troubled. I am here; I am the Son of God, very God who was manifested in the flesh. Don’t worry, don’t worry! If you believe in God, believe in me; I have come down from above, and I am here to help you. Bring your burdens to me! I will take them and give you rest. I have come to lift your heavy burdens; I have come to set you free from those burdens! Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light (Matthew 11:28-30).
Although you are to unload your burdens on the Lord, there is one burden the Lord wants you to carry: the burden for lost souls. Any burden the Lord ordains you to carry brings His blessings, His rewards. However, to keep you from carrying God’s burden, the devil seeks to load you down with all kinds of his troubles, concerns that are no profit to God and no blessing to you. These are the burdens to cast on the Lord.
When you’re full of worry, you can’t really go into the presence of God in prayer the way you should. Park your worries outside the prayer chamber. Worry builds a wall between you and your Lord. In much the same way you would look on your child who was suffering with some terrible disease, the Lord looks on His children who are full of worry. In the eyes of God, worry is like a disabling affliction. The Lord wants to lift worry from you. Jesus said, Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (John 14:27).
Tell God What You Need
How many hours since your heart first began beating has it been full of troubles that were not the will of God? God, however, will trouble the heart of a sinner, put it under conviction of its need for Him. A heart dealt with in this way can lead a sinner to salvation; this type of burden is wonderful because it comes from God. But bending under worry spirits sent from the enemy is not God’s will for you. Know the difference between the enemy’s trouble spirits and the troubled feelings God gives to bring a sinner to repentance.
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God (Philippians 4:6). This verse opens wide the door to the promises of God. Be careful—or anxious—about nothing as you come to God in a spirit of thanksgiving with your requests.
Bring your requests to me; I’ll take care of them! the Lord is saying. It’s foolish to worry over requests the Lord has promised to take care of, and even more foolish to worry when you have nothing to worry about. In unwavering trust, take your worries, take your requests before the Lord.
Holding on to needless burdens simply means you are not trusting yourself in the presence of God; you’re not trusting yourself to believe Him, and you’re not trusting Him to do what He has promised.
Be a Happy Witness
With gladness tell God: Lord, here is my burden: I’m leaving it with you, and I am going to be a happy witness today. As long as you are “frowned up” and “burdened down” with unnecessary burdens, how can you effectively carry the burden for lost souls the Lord wants you to carry? Instead of being a beacon of Heaven’s sunshine to the lost, you’re so heavy with burdens that the joy of the Lord isn’t flowing from you to others. In that condition, you have a hard time convincing anyone you are a happy Christian. In fact, you’re not happy. You may protest: “Down deep I’m happy.” Hidden happiness won’t help others one bit. What they see in your face is a depressing sight. People have their own worries to handle, and they find that trying to deal with yours, too, is too much. They have enough tears without trying to dry yours.
Seldom will people ask why you are sad; in fact, sadness pushes them away from you. But if they see true joy and gladness on your face, they want to know what it’s all about; now the door is open for you to tell them about Jesus.
Some people do such a good job of worrying that the devil doesn’t need to bother them. It’s amazing how they hold on to thoughts of oppression, depression, unpleasantness, and misery instead of reaching for things that bless and help them. Putting away thoughts of weakness, seek every day to grow stronger in the joy of the Lord. The joy of the Lord is your strength (Nehemiah 8:10). The Lord puts His promises within your reach; with joy you can serve yourself from His table loaded down with blessings and be filled with the things of the Lord. Rejoicing in the Lord, you will delight in telling all who will listen how wonderful it is to worship the Lord in Spirit and in truth. Never defeat your testimony with depressing burdens; never serve a dead testimony.
Keep the Storm on the Outside
No matter how fiercely the storms are raging, Jesus has a peace to give in time of trouble that no one can explain. Why worry about the storms on the outside when you are safe in a place of shelter? Keep the storm outside, and keep God’s faith within.
As a child, I liked a hard storm. The lightning flashing, the thunder roaring, the house shaking was great action to me. Watching trees bowing down in a fierce wind almost to the ground excited me. Storms could be beneficial; the pouring rain meant the crops were being watered. Safe inside, I delighted in watching them.
The storms don’t always affect people as they did me. Some people fear for their life in a storm, thinking: God’s going to kill me! God’s going to kill me! If God wants to kill you, all He needs to do is simply cut off your air supply. Jesus didn’t come to kill people; He came to give life, for He is the Bread of life. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst (John 6:35). Jesus is life for all who take Him into their heart. How wonderful!
Trust God with All Your Heart
Jesus brought divinity to us: Divine love, divine peace, divine wisdom, divine knowledge, divine compassion, divine strength, divine everything. You can trust what He brought; it will last for all eternity. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths (Proverbs 3:5,6). With God in charge, with your trust in Him, you have nothing to worry about, do you? Don’t be cautious in trusting God; just trust Him with your whole heart.
Some people may think trusting God is reckless, but when you use divine faith you will be all right. In II Kings we read of four lepers who, throwing all caution to the winds in a life and death situation, stepped out in faith. They lived in a time when Samaria was cut off, besieged by the Syrians; and the people in the city were starving. And there were four leprous men at the entering in of the gate: and they said one to another, Why sit we here until we die? If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die (II Kings 7:3,4).
The four used reckless faith; knowing they had nothing to lose, they threw themselves right into the enemy’s camp. And they rose up in the twilight, to go unto the camp of the Syrians: and when they were come to the uttermost part of the camp of Syria, behold, there was no man there. For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us. Wherefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their asses, even the camp as it was, and fled for their life. And when these lepers came to the uttermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, and did eat and drink (II Kings 7:5-8). What a deliverance they found! Imagine how eagerly they ate! We need to trust God with that kind of eagerness, that total dependence, that great rejoicing.
Have the Peace of God
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful (Colossians 3:15). Let worry rule in your heart? No! Let the peace of God rule in your heart; let it have total dominion. The peace of God is as strong as God Himself; His peace in your heart brings great power, divine strength that can never be destroyed. Human peace is fragile, easily shattered, but not divine peace.
How do you get rid of worries? Draw on the promises of peace in the Word of God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). Through the power of the Lord He will keep your heart and mind as you yield to Him. When you give in to worry, then the power and the Spirit of the Lord can no longer bring you peace. People who fall short of trusting God, who don’t want to yield too much of self, find that they don’t receive much peace. Turn your mind, your heart over to the Holy Spirit in complete trust in His mighty keeping power.
With God’s peace ruling in your heart and with a thankful spirit, give glory to the Lord. Know through and through in whom you believe, that God will take care of you; and in that confidence, you will find peace. When you know God will look out for you, why would you worry? God did not give you a mind to be tormented with worry; He gives minds of divine love and divine power—sound minds of peace.
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee (Isaiah 26:3). He will keep you in perfect peace when your mind is stayed on Him. Keeping your mind on the Lord shows that you trust in Him. If you let the devil set you off into flights of worry and fear, you’re not keeping your mind stayed on the Lord.
Reach for God’s Overcoming Power
Fear is a detestable thing; it blocks you from trusting God. God offers you His perfect love to cast out fear. Jesus brought you that love—you can have it. Perfect love casteth out fear (I John 4:18).
You may claim to believe all the Bible, but if you worry, it shows there is some doubt in you.
At times the Lord called the disciples “ye of little faith.” Jesus had given them great faith, but until Pentecost they used little faith. Today He is still giving great faith; more faith than you could ever use is available to you in Jesus. Do you use only a tiny bit of faith, and then wonder why you don’t conquer? The Lord is your sufficiency; He gives you everything you need, everything. His overcoming power is within your reach; and He wants you to use it.
When trouble comes, tell yourself: I have Jesus for this. The first thing each morning instead of running for a cup of coffee, run to meet the Lord, bulldozing the devil under. Lord, I have come to separate the burdens today. Lord, this one’s yours, and this one’s yours—and this one’s mine. The burdens you cannot handle give to the Lord. That which you can do something about, take care of. Don’t ask God to do for you what you can do yourself. Do you ask God to wash your face or give you a bath? Do you ask God to help you dress? You can do those things yourself. But if you’re afflicted in body and your strength is about all gone, you cry out: Oh, God help me. Help me get dressed, help me to be able to bathe myself, help me Lord, help me! When you need the Lord’s help, He’s ready to give it.
Insomnia
“I didn’t sleep a wink last night,” an exhausted woman complained.
“What did you do?” the listener responded.
“I just walked the floor all night.”
“Why? Did you need the exercise?”
“No! I was worried to death! I know I won’t sleep a wink tonight either; I’m going to be miserable. This happens to me every time a problem comes up; I just can’t sleep at all.”
“Well, where is the Lord? Has He gone to sleep? Have you called Heaven to ask, Is God home? Will you put yourself to bed in peace or torment?”
Give your problems to the Lord saying, I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety (Psalm 4:8). Have no fear! In the Lord is perfect, divine confidence, divine faith, divine love. Jesus is the divine Savior, divine Redeemer, and He is ready to move for you.
A God of Supply
Why do you worry? Is it because you’re afraid God won’t supply your needs? But supplying your needs is His promise: But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). When you worry, you cast a poor reflection on Jesus because you act as though He’s not rich after all. You give the impression that the Lord is about to declare bankruptcy, that you don’t know whether He’ll be able to take care of you or not. That’s not trusting God.
Through the Word of God, learn how to get rid of your worries. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof (Matthew 6:25-34).
Take no thought of your lack of possessions, your dwindling food supply. God knows what you need. Think of the four lepers who set out to do all they knew to do. Do all you know to do in seeking God’s Kingdom; seek His face in wonderful praises for His love and care. Take a lesson from the birds. If your supply is gone, know that God will not be gone. Your need will be met when you take the Lord as your supply—but, remember, He can’t move for you when you’re full of worry.
I say again: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you (Matthew 6:33). Seek the spiritual things and the Lord will add the physical, the material things you need. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace (Romans 8:6). Most Christians have their spiritual priorities and their material priorities in reverse: they seek the material things of life, the physical things; and the last thing they seek is God’s Kingdom of love, peace, joy, supply. His Kingdom holds all the greatness of Heaven for you. Seek ye first the Kingdom; seek the face of God. Seek the face of God until you are sure God is working for you. Seek the face of God until you are positive without a doubt that He loves you, He loves you, He loves you.
The Lord Will Never Leave You
Worry will come to everyone at some time; it’s a fear that can strike suddenly. The important thing is to not keep it. Trouble will come, but don’t carry it. Know where to take it—to the Lord—never, never take it to bed with you. Get rid of it. If you sleep with your worries, they will spread through you, working on the inside. You’ll wake in the morning worn out, miserable. Unload them all; tell Jesus you’re glad He’s with you. Jesus said He’d always be with you, that He’d never leave you or forsake you. Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen (Matthew 28:20).
Just because troubles come, the Lord isn’t going to abandon you. He’s right there to help you. For he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee (Hebrews 13:5).
Love, God’s love, will do all the wonderful things that need to be done. Love, His kind of love will never fail you. Why should you worry?
Some people look for things to worry about, spending much of their life trying to build bridges they will never use. Wait on the Lord; He promised to see you safely across the dangerous waters of life. If no bridge is where you think it should be, it doesn’t matter: God can open up the waters.
Israel didn’t have a bridge over the Red Sea. Seemingly trapped on the banks, the Israelites felt fear crash in on their hearts when they saw Pharaoh’s army so close behind. Then they heard the glorious message: Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will show to you today: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen today, ye shall see them again no more forever. The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace (Exodus 14:13,14).
Listen to What the Spirit Is Saying
Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord: Are you hearing that message, are you listening? Are you trusting in the salvation of the Lord? He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith (Revelation 2:7). Listen to what the Spirit is saying; the Spirit always gives you the Word, the promises of God. Never, never will the Holy Spirit go outside the Word of God to direct you. The Word is ever with Him, and He uses it. The Holy Spirit feeds you the promises of God; He feeds you with the Word, gives you strength, power through the Word that endureth forever.
A child of God should never doubt God’s love. Know that He loves you, and don’t talk yourself out of His blessings of love! He loves you so much that He’ll do whatever needs to be done for you.
I believe He loves you so much that He’ll heal you; what do you believe? Sinner, I believe He loves you so much that He will save your soul; what do you believe? You who are depressed and oppressed, who are battled from every side by the enemy, you can be set free, be happy.
Hear Jesus calling: Come and dine! Will you turn away from His table loaded down with His blessings and not dine? Will you fail to eat of His promises? Will you neglect to claim what you need? The Lord longs for you to fill your soul with the greatness of Heaven.
Does Worry Bless You?
Whenever the spirit of worry rears its ugly head, turn to the Word of God, to His promises of peace, love, and joy. Don’t look to people; look to the Word. Get to the Word; embrace the promises of God and let those promises bring you to life in God’s love, power and grace through the power in His divine blood. It will happen if you’ll let it, for the Lord is moving and blessing.
Has worry ever blessed you? How much have you gotten out of it? But you say, “What am I going to do when I can’t pay my bills?” If worry would pay bills, yours would have been paid long ago; but worry won’t pay the bills. Doing all you know to do and then trusting in God is the answer; put your faith in God.
The Lord came to lift the burden of sin and to take the spirit of worry from you. He came to lift those burdens of depression, oppression, despair, fretting, worrying, and that old spirit of trouble. Will you accept the fact that the Lord will lift that burden of worry along with the other burdens? The Lord wants His people to be a happy people. One day He’ll take you who are part of the bridal company to the heavenly home He has prepared, dry all your tears and make you happy forever. The Lord doesn’t rejoice in your worries and fretting; He rejoices in your trust in Him.
Saved through the Blood-Name of Jesus
If you are steeped in worry and trouble, wondering what you are going to do: Put your trust in God today, I say again. He loves you, and He’ll show you the way to His perfect deliverance; He’ll bring you out from under your unnecessary burdens.
You who are unsaved: It’s time to trust that soul of yours to God; He’s the only one who can help you for time and eternity. Your only way into Heaven is through Jesus Christ the Son of God. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:12). Salvation is in the blood-name Jesus. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ (I Corinthians 3:11).
There’s no other way into Heaven but through the divine shed blood of Jesus, no other way. Jesus said, I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture (John 10:9). Jesus is the only door. If you have wandered afar off from Jesus, let me pray the sinners’ prayer with you: Oh God, save my soul! I’m so sorry I sinned against you, but I have come home. I will serve you, Lord, the rest of my life. I believe the blood of Jesus washes away all of my sins. Come into my heart, Jesus! Come on in Jesus!
If you believed that prayer, you can say: Hallelujah, He has come! Hallelujah, Jesus is mine! Now that you’re His child, start praying and reading your Bible. Bible fasting, too, will help you walk with God in His faith, in His love, in His life. Jesus said, I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly (John 10:10).
With His Stripes We Are Healed
You who are sick and afflicted: You can be healed. Fear not: believe only (Luke 8:50). Isaiah the prophet tells us that with his stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53:5). God’s wonderful gift of miracles and His gifts of healing have brought miracles to untold multitudes of people. You who have leprosy: The lepers are cleansed through this Jesus blood ministry. You who have AIDS or any other incurable disease: You can be healed through the blood of Jesus that has delivered people again and again. Feel His holy presence right now. That little one may be dying, but the child can be healed. Regardless the disease or affliction you may have—it may be cancer, diabetes or heart trouble—God is ready to heal you through the blood-name of His wonderful Son, Jesus. In that blood name is all the power needed.
Lord, I bring the sick and afflicted to you. Lay a healing hand on the sick and afflicted. In the all-powerful blood-name of Jesus, we know with His blood stripes we have healing for the body. Heal, in the all-powerful name! Heal, in the holy, holy name of Jesus! Heal, heal, I pray!
The healing power is flowing, wiping out diseases, taking care of deformities. I am not the healer, the Lord is, and He makes people whole. If you felt the presence of the Lord, decide that it’s your sign, and watch yourself or your loved one get well. Casting all your care upon him: for he careth for you (I Peter 5:7).
Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you (II Corinthians 13:11).
