Wilt Thou Be Made Whole?
by Steve Millar
October 2022
Wilt thou be made whole (John 5:6)? That is the question Jesus asked an impotent man who was lying at the pool of Bethesda. That was a special pool in that day because an angel of the Lord would come down periodically and stir the waters. The first person to get into that water would receive a miracle.
We don’t have a physical pool of Bethesda today, but we do have a spiritual pool of Bethesda; and it is filled with the divine blood of Jesus Christ. This pool doesn’t have any restrictions because the blood of Jesus can heal one person at a time or multitudes of people at a time. No one has to wait for an angel to arrive to receive a miracle. A person can reach out in faith at any time and receive what they need from the Lord. He has provided us with miracle power to restore our health and to bring us into physical prosperity, and it is His will for us to be well.
When Jesus asked that man, “Wilt thou be made whole?”, it must have sounded to him like he had control over whether or not he could receive his miracle when he didn’t think that was so. I’m sure he wanted to be made whole; but he told Jesus, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me (John 5:7). Every time the angel arrived and troubled the water, someone else would get into the pool first; so he must have been very frustrated.
Jesus understood where the man was coming from, but He also knew what the man could have; so Jesus said, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath (John 5:8,9). Jesus spoke just seven words, and the miracle took place. It was that simple.
We don’t know how many days and nights that man had lain by the pool just waiting and hoping he could receive his miracle, but the Bible says he was afflicted for thirty-eight years. Friend, if you have been waiting day after day for your deliverance, you don’t have to wait any longer. God sent us Heaven’s best in the form of Jesus to give us the opportunity to be made whole; and like the man at the pool, all you have to do is believe.
Faith to Believe
When Jesus saw the man lying next to the pool, I’m sure He recognized the man had faith. Jesus just needed to show the man that he could have faith in Him.
Do you have faith to believe that miracles are for today? The Bible says, Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). That means the same Jesus who performed miracles 2000 years ago is still performing them today. It is amazing how many gimmicks and schemes people run after in hopes of finding a cure for what ails them when the blood of Jesus is so close that they can reach out and receive.
The man had the benefit of having Jesus standing right in front of him, but he still had to trust and obey; and you must do the same thing. Jesus is available to you if you have the faith to believe. Paul said, For we walk by faith, not by sight (II Corinthians 5:7). If you live by your own opinions and not by the whole Word of God, then you are walking by sight; and that hinders God from being able to move for you.
For thirty-eight years, the impotent man had suffered with his affliction; but in a matter of a few seconds, Jesus instantly made him whole. When Jesus told the man to take up his bed and walk, the man could have given Jesus excuses; but instead, he rose up and was completely made whole. For years, the man had been hoping someone would help him into the pool so he could receive, but that never happened. You can’t depend on man for your miracles; you must put your faith in the divine blood of Jesus Christ. Man has limitations, but the divine blood does not.
Believe Jesus Is Divine
Divine faith doesn’t hesitate; it goes into action. If you hesitate to reach out for a miracle or a healing, you are using human faith instead of divine faith; and human faith will never bring you Heaven’s best. God will work wherever faith can be found; but a lack of faith ties His hands.
The Bible tells us that when Jesus was in His own country, He went into the synagogue to teach; and many of the people were astonished by His teachings. They recognized the wisdom He had, and they saw the mighty works He performed; but they also knew that He was a carpenter. They knew who his parents, brothers and sisters were; and they were offended by Him.
Those people hindered Jesus, and He was not able to perform many miracles in His own country. He said to them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. And he marvelled because of their unbelief (Mark 6:4–6).
Think about how many people missed their miracles because they looked at Jesus as the son of Mary instead of the Son of God. Then remember the impotent man at the pool of Bethesda who looked at Jesus in divine faith and was instantly made whole.
Never Be Offended by Jesus
God has ordained ministers to serve people the Gospel and to have that Gospel be confirmed by signs, wonders and miracles. Are you offended with true men of God laying hands on people? It is not always necessary to have hands laid on you for you to receive from Heaven; but if you are against it, you are offended with the Word of God which says, They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover (Mark 16:18). Not believing that will hinder you from receiving all God has for you.
After Paul was struck blind on his way to Damascus, the Lord easily could have given him back his sight; but the Lord chose to use Ananias to lay hands on him. And the Lord said unto him [Ananias], Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul [Paul], of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth, And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight (Acts 9:11,12).
Ananias didn’t want to go because he knew how wicked Paul was and how much he had persecuted Christians. But the Lord said unto him [Ananias], Go thy way: for he [Paul] is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel (Acts 9:15). It was God’s will for Ananias to go and pray for Paul, and he obeyed.
Friend, you must never become offended with how God chooses to work through man. Always remember that God’s ways are not your ways. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts (Isaiah 55:8,9).
Agree to Receive
Jesus said, If two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them (Matthew 18:19,20). When a true minister of God lays hands on a person in Jesus’ name, he is one; and the person he is praying for is two. When they agree together in faith believing, it pulls down the power of Heaven; and God can move in a great way.
If that offends you, then you are offended by the Word of God; and the devil loves that. He wants you to form your own opinions and forsake the simple instructions God has given in the Bible. Jesus laid hands on the sick, and He trained His disciples to do the same. That is God’s plan, so don’t limit God with your own opinions. The Lord wants you to receive your miracle, but you can’t reject any of the ways He may use to give it to you.
When two, three or more are gathered together in the name of Jesus, it creates a connection with Heaven. That is why it is so important for the saints of God to gather together and worship the Lord at a church that teaches the whole truth. God honors any sacrifice you have to make to be there; and whenever you sacrifice for the sake of Christ, you will always receive Heaven’s best.
Unfortunately, some people are not willing to sacrifice for Christ, and that is why they struggle to receive miracles. God has the power to heal them, but He is hindered in moving for them in any great way when they won’t put Him first.
Help Spread the Gospel
The discipline of the Holy Spirit is very strict in this end-time hour, and you have to be determined to do the Lord’s work no matter what is going on around you. Are you willing to do anything the Lord calls on you to do, or do you have certain stipulations when it comes to working for the Lord? Is winning the lost always at the forefront of your mind, or are you willing to help with that mission only when it’s convenient for you?
If you are offended by those questions, you need to study what Paul told the Romans: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service (Romans 12:1). If you think that is unreasonable, you will also be offended with these words that Jesus spoke: Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it (Mark 8:34,35). Are you willing to lose your life for the sake of Christ?
God’s children are to take the truth in God’s Word to people all over the world, but it is up to you whether or not you will help do that. The Word says healing from Heaven is available for soul, mind and body; but there are so many people in the world who don’t know that. That is why we must let people know that Jesus can and will heal them. But he [Jesus] was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53:5).
Your Soul Must Be Whole
It is important to know that all sicknesses and diseases come from the devil, not from God. He gives only perfect gifts. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights (James 1:17). However, that doesn’t mean a person who is afflicted is failing God. We live in a sin-cursed world, and the devil wants to afflict our bodies in any way he can; but we have the remedy through the blood of Jesus Christ. We can be made whole not just in our physical bodies but in soul, mind and body.
When something is whole, it contains all the elements properly belonging to it. It is complete. If you ordered a sandwich at a restaurant and they served it to you with part of it missing, you wouldn’t be very happy because you expected to receive a whole sandwich. The Lord offers us the whole loaf, but many Christians settle for just a few crumbs because they don’t want to surrender their life completely to the Lord.
It is safe to say that most people want eternal life, but they only want to do the minimal amount of work needed to make it into Heaven. Christians who think like that are usually the ones who don’t go on to receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost. A Christian will never be spiritually whole without the baptism of the Holy Ghost.
When you give your heart to the Lord, you make a vow with God to serve Him the rest of your life; and your soul is cleansed of all sin. You have a spiritual contract with the Lord that seals your soul with the divine blood of Jesus, and all your sins are thrown into the Lord’s sea of forgetfulness. Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea (Micah 7:19). God will never again hold your sins against you.
When you are saved, you are made a brand-new creature in Christ. Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new (II Corinthians 5:17).
You Must Receive the Holy Ghost
When the Lord makes you new, you become a holy temple that is ready to go on to receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost. If you don’t do that, you will not be spiritually complete. When you refuse to receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost, you are refusing part of the Godhead; and that makes you spiritually incomplete. When you are complete, nothing needs to be added.
Jesus made it a point to tell His disciples before He ascended into Heaven, And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high (Luke 24:49). There was something extra that needed to be added to their spiritual lives, and that was the power of the Holy Ghost. We need that power too if we want to be complete or spiritually whole.
When Paul traveled to Ephesus, he asked some of the disciples there, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost (Acts 19:2). Paul went on to explain that they needed to receive the Holy Ghost. Then when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied (Acts 19:6).
Those disciples were ignorant to the baptism of the Holy Ghost until Paul gave them the truth. Then they went on to receive the Holy Ghost, and they were made spiritually whole. I say again that you will never be spiritually whole unless you go on to receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost.
Be Full of the Spirit
When Jesus ascended back to His Father in Heaven, He sent the Holy Ghost to us. It is the power of the Holy Ghost through the blood of Jesus that can deliver you and make you completely whole. Jesus knew how important it would be for His children to have the Holy Spirit; and He said, I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you (John 14:16–17).
There is a difference between the Spirit being with you and the Spirit being in you. When you get saved, the Holy Ghost is with you; but when you receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in other tongues, He comes to live in you.
The members of the Bride of Christ will be full of the Spirit. Their lamps will be filled with oil, which represents the Holy Ghost, and they will be ready for the Bridegroom to come at any time. In the parable of the ten virgins found in Matthew 25:1-13, the five foolish virgins did not have oil in their lamps; and they were shut out when the Bridegroom came. And while they [the five foolish virgins] went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready [the five wise virgins] went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other [foolish] virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not (Matthew 25:10–12).
If the Rapture takes place and you do not have the Holy Ghost living inside of you, the Lord will also say to you, “I know you not.” You may beg and plead for the Lord to come back, but it will be too late. Jesus is only coming for those who are full of the Holy Ghost.
The Philadelphia Church Was Complete
When you are full of the Holy Ghost and spiritually whole, you can claim all the promises of God. Then divinity will become so real to you that you will see with eyes of faith, and you will hear what the Spirit is saying. When Jesus was dictating letters for the seven churches to John the Revelator, He said seven times, He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches (Revelation 2:7,11,17,29; 3:6,13,22).
When the Holy Spirit lives on the inside of you, you will be able to hear what He is saying if you will yield yourself completely to Him. When you don’t have the Holy Ghost inside, that communication line will not be as clear.
Jesus did not find perfect works in all the churches mentioned in Revelation, but Jesus had this to say about that church in Philadelphia: Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth (Revelation 3:10).
What did Jesus mean when He said, “Thou hast kept the word of my patience”? Longsuffering, or patience, is one of the fruits of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5; and it means to endure hardship. When you have the fruit of longsuffering, you are steadfast and unmovable regardless of who or what comes against you.
The people in the church in Philadelphia were overcomers because they sowed to the Spirit and not to the flesh. Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well-doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not (Galatians 6:7–9).
Beware of Lukewarmness
Examine the seven churches in Revelation 2 and 3 and decide which church you fall under. Would you belong to the church in Philadelphia because you are patiently running your race, or would you belong to the church of the Laodiceans?
Jesus said the Laodiceans were lukewarm. I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth (Revelation 3:15,16). The people in the church of Laodicea were definitely not spiritually whole.
As a child of God, you are to live by the Word; or you also will be lukewarm like the Laodiceans were. You can’t just know the Word or believe the Word; you must be a doer of the Word, and that includes obeying everything the Lord says in His Word.
A Woman of Great Faith
Study the story of the Canaanite woman who went to Jesus to ask for a miracle for her daughter who was grievously vexed with a devil. I’m sure she had not been able to find help from anybody; so by faith, she was looking to Jesus to make her daughter whole.
At first, He answered her not a word (Matthew 15:23); and His disciples wanted Him to send her away because she kept crying after them.
Then Jesus said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel (Matthew 15:24); and that woman was not an Israelite.
Most people would have walked away discouraged and empty-handed, but that woman was determined to get a miracle for her daughter; so with great humility, she went before Jesus and worshiped Him and asked Him to help her. Then Jesus said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour (Matthew 15:26–28). That woman asked, sought and knocked; and by faith, she received the whole loaf.
The Lord Rewards Faith
When you are going through a valley, would the Lord say that you have great faith? The Canaanite woman had great faith, and the end result was that her daughter was made whole. She humbled herself before the Lord and didn’t let anything hinder her. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up (James 4:10). The Lord can work in a great way with people who have the spirit of humility.
Jesus destroyed the works of the devil that were vexing that Canaanite woman’s daughter; and the Bible says, For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil (I John 3:8). Jesus wants to destroy the works of the devil that are coming against you too. When Satan is tormenting you, never forget what Jesus did for that woman’s daughter. The woman’s divine faith pulled a miracle out of Glory for her daughter.
You have to recognize which of your thoughts come from the Lord and which come from the devil, and you can do that by taking them to the Word of God. He doesn’t want you to hold on to bad thoughts, and the Holy Spirit can help you get rid of them.
If you are having thoughts about wanting to end your life, you need to realize that those thoughts are not from God. The devil wants you to give up on life and kill yourself because he knows if you do, that is murder; and you will go straight to hell. You don’t have to live a life of torment; you can be made completely whole.
Let Jesus In
Friend, the question again is, “Wilt thou be made whole?” Jesus came to bring us freedom and abundant life and to make us complete just like Adam and Eve were complete before they failed. They didn’t lack anything until they broke their covenant with God and sinned. Then they lost everything.
Jesus came to bring back all that was lost in the fall of man. He said in Matthew, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For everyone that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened (Matthew 7:7,8). Jesus tells you to do three simple things: ask, seek and knock. Then He promises you will receive; you will find, and it shall be opened to you.
The Lord doesn’t want you to lack anything in your life. He wants you to be blessed, and He wants you to be complete in Him; but the first step is to accept Jesus Christ into your heart.
Pray this prayer now: Oh, God, save my soul. Forgive me for my sins. I have come home to serve you for the rest of my life. I believe the blood of Jesus washes away all of my sins. Come into my heart, Jesus! Come on in! Amen. If you meant that prayer, you have Jesus Christ in your heart.
Receive a Miracle
Friend, now that you have Jesus inside, you have the Healer; so you can have a miracle. Healing is a promise from the Lord, but you have to meet the condition of that promise if you want that promise to be fulfilled. The Lord wants to give you a miracle if you will live for Him; but what good is it if He heals you of cancer, and you go out and start smoking again? That is not the testimony God wants.
Jesus said to the impotent man, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee (John 5:14). Jesus would not have told the man to do something that wasn’t possible. When you have Jesus Christ in your heart, His divine blood will set you free in soul and body; and it will help you to continue to live free from sin.
You can be made whole right now through the divine blood of Jesus. Raise your hand in faith, expecting and trusting God to move for you in a great and mighty way.
Lord, you know what the needs of these people are. Move in a special way and make them whole all over. Break their bondages and set them free! In the name of Jesus, I curse every sickness and disease in their bodies. Heal! in the holy, blood name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Heal! in the holy name of Jesus. Wrap your loving arms around each one right now and let them feel your holy presence come upon them. Let them receive all you have for them in the blood name of Jesus. Amen. Friend, look for every sign of improvement and always give God all the praise, the honor and the glory for what He is doing for you.
Let the Holy Ghost In
Now that you are blood-washed, it is time for you to become spiritually whole by receiving the Holy Ghost. You need power from On High to make it in this final hour, so now is the time to receive. All you have to do is focus on the Lord and yield to Him. Praise Him by saying, “Glory.” Send up one glory after another; and as you are praising the Lord, the Holy Spirit will come in, take over your tongue and speak in a heavenly language.
