When the Fire Fell
by Ernest Angley
February 2006
There’s nothing in the world like the Word of the Living God. I’ve always loved to preach the Word, to deliver the sermons that God gives me. These messages are going to the world, being played in the churches in other nations. It’s as though I were there, they tell me. The sick are being healed and sinners are coming to God. How wonderful indeed to preach the Word in power and demonstration of the Holy Ghost!
Remember the pillar of fire in Old Testament times: The fire of the Holy Ghost was in visible operation in Egypt. When the fire fell, the glory of the Lord went into action. God turned the place upside down to prepare Israel to come out of bondage by His mighty hand.
The Israelites had been a diseased people, afflicted. Making bricks in the slime pits of Pharaoh year after year took an awful toll on them physically. What mistreated slaves they were! The ends of their fingers had been worn down, Josephus writes; their hands were in a pitiful shape. But Psalm 105:37 tells us that God brought them forth also with silver and gold: and there was not one feeble person among their tribes. Through the blood of the lamb on the doorpost, a type of the divine blood later to be spilled on Calvary, God delivered Israel. Through the fire of the Holy Ghost they saw signs, wonders, miracles and healings. God brought them forth with a pillar of fire and with the mighty cloud. Jesus the Son of God wrapped Himself in a cloud and led them out. And in the pillar of fire, the Holy Ghost was enclosed—what a sight! We thank God for the fire!
One Accord with the Holy Spirit
The fire of the Holy Spirit is vital for us today. We must have the power of the Holy Ghost in this hour. The power of God, the fire of God, sends earthquakes of power. Live and relive these verses in Acts: And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place (Acts 2:1). The fire of the Holy Ghost brings obedient people into one mind, one accord, into unity with the Godhead. While those in the Upper Room were in that one mind and one accord, suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them (Acts 2:2,3). The Holy Ghost descended on the Day of Pentecost in a pillar of fire, great and mighty as the pillar of fire in Egypt. It shook the earth—the fire of the Holy Ghost. Tongues of fire were licking out from those in the Upper Room; fire, fire, fire! The fire of the Holy Ghost had arrived.
Those in the Upper Room hadn’t known exactly what they were waiting for, but it was this fire of the Holy Ghost. Evidently Jesus had not described that fire, but He let them know they would speak with a new tongue. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues (Mark 16:17).
All believers were to receive the Holy Ghost; it was a must in the beginning of the Church. They were not to preach the first sermon, not to have the first testimony, not to put the Church into operation without the Holy Ghost.
After the Resurrection, Jesus lingered forty days and nights to teach His followers more about the Holy Ghost. Most of those teachings were the works of the Holy Spirit, teachings to prepare the Early Church to receive. When the pillar of fire landed in the Upper Room, those waiting for Him were ready, and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance (Acts 2:4). How wonderful indeed! On the Day of Pentecost about 120 in the Upper Room were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they went on to stay full of Him.
I love the pillar of fire, the tongue of fire. I’m not ashamed of the tongue of fire; I want the whole world to know about it. I never would dare preach or testify without this tongue of fire. There’s nothing greater than the tongue of fire to tell the story of the Old Rugged Cross and the power and greatness of God.
Doubt Prevents God from Moving
The pillar of fire moved with all strength and power in Old Testament times. Had the Israelites followed the cloud and the pillar of fire without grumbling and complaining they would have been in the Promised Land in eleven days rather than forty years, but it was not to be. In fact, all who were twenty years and older, except Caleb and Joshua, died in the wilderness without claiming the Land of Canaan. Why? God couldn’t get the doubt out of them and He had to let them wander in the wilderness until they all died. Think of the thousands and thousands of graves in the wilderness, graves of doubters!
Finally the Lord managed to take the remaining Israelites into the Promised Land, but even they never yielded to the cloud as they should have, nor have the Israelites today yielded to the pillar of fire. Until they do yield, there will be no peace for them. They want peace without Jesus, and that’s an impossibility in this old sin-cursed world.
If you don’t have Jesus Christ, if you don’t accept Him, you will not have lasting peace. No matter how much God has tried to move for the Israelite people, they don’t want Jesus and they don’t want citizens who do. Certain ones in Israel have tried to make Christianity illegal for their people. No wonder the enemy has come in on them; no wonder they are afraid! It will take the Tribulation Period and the Battle of Armageddon to bring them to their senses.
Two-thirds Will Die
The great prophet Zechariah said that during the time of the Great Tribulation, it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God (Zechariah 13:8,9). Only one third of Israel will accept Jesus Christ when at last peace will flow like rivers.
But we who love Christ have that peace in our hearts now, and Israel could have it as well if they would accept Him. We have that magnificent glory of the Lord, and they could have it as well, but in their day of visitation 2,000 years ago, they rejected Christ. Now the Gentiles as a whole are rejecting their hour of great visitation. It’s almost over; the hour of the Gentiles will close with the Bride of Christ being taken out, the Rapture at the Second Coming of Jesus.
The fire blazed on Sinai. Did the Israelites embrace it? No. They were afraid of the very thing they needed. Had they yielded to the fire at Sinai, had they yielded to the Godhead and stayed yielded, all would have been well. The Lord drove out seven nations to give Israel the land. When Israel obeyed God—in the brief times they did obey Him—no power could stop them.
God’s Voice Shook the Earth
The Church of Jesus Christ today is coming out of the wilderness to take her place beside Jesus, to be just like Him in this final hour. Nothing can stop her. Devil, your kingdom has to come down! Working until the devil’s kingdom is torn down, we’re going to sound the Gospel Trumpet with earthquakes of power to shake the inhabitants of the earth so they will hear the voice of the Lord and see the signs and wonders of God one more time. Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven (Hebrews 12:26). God has promised to shake the earth and heaven, and then the end will come. But the end will be the beginning for the Bride to really live. In the meantime we’re inside the cloud with all needs supplied.
“I Am the Lord That Healeth Thee”
The Lord made a covenant with Israel outside the cloud, saying, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee (Exodus 15:26). God promised to keep sickness away from their door, and it’s time to decide that sickness is not the will of the Lord. Just because others get sick around you doesn’t mean you have to be sick. Do you expect to be sick? No place in the Bible is found a verse that says God wants you to be sick.
In the wilderness the Israelites didn’t need doctors, hospitals or cafeterias; they feasted on heavenly manna. Today we can feast on the true Bread from Heaven. Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst (John 6:32-35).
How wonderful to feast on the Lord! O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him (Psalm 34:8). It’s time for us to taste, and not only to taste, but to eat the Word of God. Jesus said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4).
Come, See the King!
Are you dining on the Word of God? If so, you’re strong in the Lord, dining in spiritual Canaan. Joy is ringing in your soul, and you feel you just have to tell others about the greatness of the Lord or else you may burst inside. You’re like the woman at the well who ran into the city crying, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ (John 4:29)? We’re running throughout the world crying, Come see a man who told us all things we have done! Come, see the Savior of the world! Come, see the King! He’s mighty in all His ways; He’s the King of Glory, the King of power, the King of healing! Come, see the King!
How wonderful to know that Jesus is King in our hearts! He has brought kingship inside us; we are His servants; we belong to Him and we delight in serving Him. He is Master of all our stormy seas. With Him we have nothing to fear, nothing to worry about. It’s through the fire of the Holy Ghost and the blood that Jesus brought that we’re walking this highway of holiness. He brought redeeming, divine blood all the way from Heaven for our liberty and salvation.
When Jesus walked the earth and met a death disease, that divine blood went into action with all faith and power and defeated it. Death couldn’t stay in Lazarus’ body when the Blood voice cried out, Lazarus, come forth! Why would you think God won’t heal you? The Bible says Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). The miracles Jesus brought about when He walked the earth He is still doing today. Why do you think you have to carry that cancer, that TB, that heart trouble till you die? The Lord is here to give you a miracle. He wants to make you a witness of His miracle power, make you a light for Him to shine to the whole world.
I Felt as though I Were in Quicksand
Years ago I received my miracle, and you can have yours. I didn’t think my miracle was coming; I thought surely I was going to die. I had suffered so much that it seemed I no longer had faith for my miracle, and hope was going fast. I felt as though I were in quicksand up to my waist and being drawn down with no way of stopping. Nothing, it seemed, could help me. Why God was going to let me die I didn’t know. My soul was right with Him, but why would He let me die so young when He had called me to preach His Gospel? Why would He let me die at twenty-three? He had gifted me to preach the Gospel—and I was so willing to preach it—but now He was going to let me die. I couldn’t understand…but whatever He wanted.
I learned later that I had to go into that valley of intense suffering and mental torment to have the compassion of Jesus for the sick and dying, for sinful, hurting, suffering humanity throughout the world. I couldn’t help people if I wasn’t able to put myself in their place. I couldn’t help that dying soul the way God wanted unless I had been to death’s door and knew what that monster was really like. I had been there, I knew and I had such compassion. Using the faith God had given me, I could put myself in a dying person’s place and be glad I could understand what the person was going through. I have Heaven’s biggest gun: the Blood of Jesus that can stop death in its tracks. I’ve talked to people when the death angel was in their room, used the blood of Jesus, and the death angel had to move. People have been brought into the services more dead than alive and the Lord has healed them.
Wilt thou be made well? Will you receive the big miracle you need? Will you take the Word, establish it in your heart as the Lord is speaking it to you right now? Will you use the promises of God?
After the pillar of fire blazed in the Upper Room, all hell boiled over; but it didn’t make any difference. Persecutions began afresh; however, the more the early Christians were persecuted the more they prayed, fasted, believed God and stayed in unity with each other in the Lord.
Living by Promise
Wrapped in the pillar of fire, Stephen suffered a martyr’s death. But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God (Acts 7:55). Stephen was full of the Holy Ghost. When you are full of the Spirit, the world has gone out of your life. Full of the Holy Ghost, you are full of the love, peace, goodness and mercy of God; in other words, you’re simply full of God. More a part of Heaven than you are a part of Earth, you have the light, and it’s shining bright. Never walk in the night! Never accept the darkness! You’re too close home to not have the light. The pillar of fire is for you, for all who are in the cloud of the presence of God. In the cloud all needs are supplied—God has promised! Living in His presence means living by promise.
In Eden, Adam and Eve didn’t live by promise. The Lord hadn’t promised to supply their needs because all was already supplied. Promises weren’t necessary. Outside Eden, however, we have to live by promise. The Lord wills us to use every promise we need; for every promise found in the Word is rightfully ours. We must use the promises of God; they are life to our bodies and eternal life to our spirits. Every promise has all the light of God in it, all the love and power of Heaven, all the goodness of God and compassion of Calvary. Everything we need is in the promises of God.
Do you have a little nagging doubt that the promises are for you? Then cry like the man who came to Christ for a miracle: Lord, I believe! Help thou my unbelief!
Stephen’s Death Haunted Saul
Stephen died in the same Spirit that Jesus died in. Stephen died in the cloud of His presence, died wrapped in the pillar of fire inside the cloud, inside Jesus. All the favor, strength and power of Heaven Stephen used to give the message of Heaven to his murderers.
Saul witnessed Stephen’s death; he had watched over the cloaks of those stoning Stephen. Saul, later called Paul, heard Stephen cry, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul. And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit (Acts 7:56-59).
That cry of Stephen must have given Saul chills night after night; he couldn’t get away from it. I can picture him waking during the night in a dead sweat, trembling all over as the voice of Stephen echoed in his mind: I see Jesus standing at the right hand of the Father! The manifestation of the pillar of fire and the cloud of God haunted Saul. God was shaking him, getting him ready for the road to Damascus when he would be struck down to the ground, blinded.
And as he [Saul] journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do (Acts 9:3-6). Saul obeyed, made a complete turnaround in his life, suffering many things for the sake of Christ. The Lord changed his name to Paul, and he had—and still has—great influence in the world on all who love God.
Dead to Self
Are you in the cloud of God; are you in the pillar of fire? Do you have the fire of the Spirit in you? If so, envy and strife are all gone from your life. The degradation of the old you is completely dead.
You can be in the cloud in Christ Jesus only when you are dead to self, only when the new you is created in righteousness and true holiness. And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness (Ephesians 4:24). Righteousness and true holiness make you just like Jesus.
When you hear people say you can’t be like Jesus, pay them no mind. You know they’re not in the cloud, not in Jesus. Listen to the apostle Paul—he was in Jesus: I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me (Galatians 2:20). Christ lived in Paul and Paul lived in Christ. Isn’t that wonderful!
“Here Am I: Send Me!”
The power of God and the power of the Holy Ghost will move for you who love the Lord with all your heart and are humble and obedient before Him. In the pillar of fire is deliverance, healing, everything you need, all the peace, joy and holy boldness. When you’re in the pillar of fire, you prepare to do anything the Lord wants you to do. You don’t knock your head against a brick wall trying to do what God wants; you lean on His power and anointing and you do it.
Isaiah at first didn’t want to go to a disobedient people, to the house of Israel where the Lord had directed him. He knew how stubborn they were; he knew them well. In Isaiah 6, Isaiah records what brought about his change of heart: Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me (Isaiah 6:6-8). The coal of fire—the pillar of fire went to work, and now Isaiah was pleading with the Lord to use him. Send me; I’ll go and set them free! That’s the way each one of us must be.
When we’re set on fire through the pillar of fire and the blood of the Old Rugged Cross it’s, Here am I! Use me! Here am I! I’ll fast, I’ll pray. I’ll live holy before you, Lord. Here am I. Use your power through me! Use your faith, your Gospel through me. Use me, Lord, use me!
Do you have the tongue of fire? Are you walking in the love of God, in the Spirit of God? Have you left this old world behind? Have you separated yourself from it? Are you saying, Jesus, here I come! What’s burning in your soul? When you wake in the morning, is it: Jesus, it’s good to be alive and to know that I’ll walk with you another day through your blood power and the power of the Holy Ghost?
Miracles Are Real
I believe in miracles because I believe in God. I believe in big miracles, and, I say again, I got my big miracle. Never have I found out from God how many afflictions I was healed of; it makes no difference. I just know I was whole. It was later that the Lord reminded me He made me whole all over. The night I got my miracle I was so excited that I hadn’t even considered I had been made whole all over. It was like a dream, but what a beautiful dream! Was it real? What if I woke up to find it had actually all been a dream? It didn’t matter whether I slept or not, but finally way in an early morning hour, I fell asleep. After a few hours I awoke to find the miracle still was real.
So many, many nights down through the years as I sink my head into the pillow, I thank God that there is not a pain in my body. It’s horrible to suffer, and I had suffered deaths feeling as though a hot iron were pressing to my body. It seemed at times that I couldn’t stand the agony any longer, not another split second of it. But, praise God, the healing came!
Healing is the children’s bread, and God brought the whole loaf. Anything that needed to be done, God did it; He took care of me, gave me miracles of re-creation. My heart bothered me no more, my stomach no longer was burning up with pain. Nothing bothered me anymore. I had been made whole in the perfection of God’s grace. It was wonderful indeed! My big miracle happened many years ago, and I still have strength from that miracle. Miracles never die.
Look at miracles through God’s vision. Examine them, God’s miracles. Weigh them carefully; let them become so valuable to you, priceless. If the enemy tries to come back to afflict you once God has healed you, know he is bringing a lie of the devil. Never doubt what God has done; never doubt that the miracle still lives within. Heaven’s strength is in your miracle, the strength of Heaven that defeats the devil with a blood miracle. All healing comes through the blood, divine blood.
The God of miracles lives in the cloud of His presence. In a vision, I’m beholding the glory now. The palm trees are showing up in the vision; the star of Jesus is passing over, and I hear the voice of the Lord saying, Ask what you will.
The Blood, Our Greatest Possession
Jesus didn’t say to ask for little miracles; He said, If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you (John 15:7). Ask what you will. Masterful surgery is taking place, saith the Lord. Jesus is asking you, Wilt thou be made whole? He has given you the faith, the promise; He has given you everything it takes if you are born again. But maybe you are one who never has received that born-again experience. If so, pray this prayer of divine salvation with me:
Oh, God, I have sinned against you; I am so sorry! But I have come home, and I’m going to serve you, Lord, the rest of my life. I believe in the blood of Jesus, and I know there’s power in the blood to wash away all my sins. Come into my heart, Jesus, come on in!
If you meant that prayer, if you really accepted the blood, the Lord has moved into your heart. Thank God for the blood of Jesus; it’s our greatest possession.
Take the Big Miracle
The big miracle is on the table. Will you use the promise of the miracle and be made well? Will you pass it by? Will you be afraid to take it? You who are sick and afflicted, God has gifted me with His gifts, His power for healing. I’m not the healer; He’s the healer. All the honor and glory go to Him.
A Message from the Holy Spirit
I am here to give big miracles, saith the Lord. I am here and the big miracles are on the table. I have raised you up for this hour as witnesses for this hour, saith the Lord. I am here and the big miracle for you is on your Lord’s table, saith the Lord. You can reach for the big miracle. It’s my will for you to have the big miracle; it’s my will for you to be made whole. I do not delight in your body being sick and weak and afflicted, but I delight in you being strong and well and a witness to my greatness, saith the Lord. Feel my Spirit; feel my heartbeat and let your heart beat in rhythm with mine as the first Adam’s heart beat in rhythm, saith the Lord. I am here to unctionize every part of you, every muscle and every nerve. I am here to work on your body. I made you and I know all about you. I have all power over your body when you give it to me, saith the Lord. When you put it in my hands and leave it there, then I’m able to do the impossibilities for you, saith the Lord. Open wide your heart’s door. Open wide for the big miracle now. Open wide, saith the Lord.
Praise God for Your Big Miracle!
Open wide and let the Holy Spirit flow this anointing in for your big miracle. It’s so easy when you let the Lord do it. Put yourself in the hands of the Lord, the pillar of fire, the grace of the blood.
God is in this place, the pillar of fire is here, the cloud of His presence. We are surrounded by the fire of the Holy Ghost. I am able to see it in the vision. It’s miracle power, a takeover by the Spirit of God. Be a part of the takeover! Let go and let God move. Holy is the name of the Lord! Your miracle is on the table; reach out and embrace it. Reach out in all faith and take it. It’s yours through the blood. Reach out and take a miracle and be made whole. Reach out and take a miracle for your mind, your body, your eyes, your feet and legs, your back and spine. Take whatever you need. Let the heart be re-created, every part that goes to it. In the name of Jesus, let your lungs be healed. Get rid of the diabetes.
Sickness is not of God; it comes from the devil. Man knew no sickness until he gave over to the devil. It’s the will of the Lord for you to be well, to have a healthy body, saith the Lord. Praise the Lord for your big miracle in the name of Jesus. The Lord is serving you well through the fire of the Holy Ghost. He has given you faith to believe and He has put the miracle within your reach. He loves you with an unending, everlasting love, and He’s serving you well; only believe. Why doubt Him when He has given you faith to believe? All things are possible when you believe.
Believe this prayer of healing I pray now and get well:
Lord, I bring the sick, the afflicted to you. I bring the cancer victims, the heart patients, the crippled, the diabetics, those with HIV/AIDS. I bring little deformed children, little blind babies for your powerful, holy deliverance. I bring them in your faith, the faith in the divine blood. I bring them in your love, Lord, the love in the divine blood of Jesus, the healing blood, the miracle power. In the name of Jesus, from your gift of miracles, your gifts of healing it comes: Heal! Heal in the holy name of the Lord, in the mighty name of Jesus.
Trust God’s promise of healing. It’s time for big miracles, saith the Lord. Reach with His faith and love; take the big miracle and be made well. It doesn’t matter what the doctors have said about your case. We respect them highly; they do much good, but God is the healer, the bringer of miracles. Over six billion people live on planet Earth, and many can be turned to righteousness by seeing the greatness of the Lord’s miracles manifested, by seeing the pillar of fire and the great cloud of God in living reality.
A Prayer of Dedication
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service (Romans 12:1). Present your body as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto God; tell the Lord that: I present my body as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto you, God. You can have all of me, Lord. I know you have given all of yourself to me, and I accept all of you, Lord. I know all needs will be supplied, physically, spiritually and financially. I am yours, Lord. Here am I, use me. Use me to bring in the harvest. Use me to tell the good news of the soon coming of our Lord. Use me to pray people through to an Upper Room experience. Use me to encourage those who are discouraged, and give me the tears of Calvary, the tears of my Master. Use me, Lord, and I will count no sacrifice too great. Use me Lord, and I will serve you in gladness, and I will be your prisoner to do your holy will. I accept my big miracle and I will praise you in the days ahead for it. I accept your promise; you said you had it on the table for me to reach out and take. You promised if I would reach for it I would find it. If I would hug it close to my spirit and walk holy before you, it would be all mine. Never will I forget you, Lord; never will I forget when you gave me my big miracle. Take the whole world but give me Jesus.
The place is filled with His holy presence. We’re in the cloud of His miracle greatness. The Holy Ghost is showing up in the vision; it has filled this whole house of God. The power of the Holy Ghost, the power of miracles, the power of greatness is yours, saith the Lord.
Jesus said, Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you (Acts 1:8). Receive power, power from On High, power that is not of this Earth. Go forth to be a great witness for the Lord. Stand by this ministry because it is the Jesus ministry going to the whole world in this final hour by television, international radio, the website, the printed page, crusades.
I will be praying for you, and you pray for us. We’ll be somewhere working for the Lord. God be with you.
