What God Calls a Soul Winner
by Ernest Angley
March 2010
I don’t believe anyone loves personal soul winning more than I do, and the Lord gave me this message especially for you. There are two special soul-winning scriptures in the Old Testament that you must keep in mind. The first verse is, And he that winneth souls is wise (Proverbs 11:30b). The second verse is, And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars forever and ever (Daniel 12:3). Both of these scriptures speak about being wise; but they’re referring to being God-wise, not human-wise. The Lord wants you to understand that you’re a wise person in His eyes when you give of yourself in any way to win souls.
They that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament. This means that the wise will shine like the stars and the sun because they’ll carry the glory of God. They’ll have the same glory that Jesus had when He came to earth from Heaven and the same glory He had when He was transformed on the Mount of Transfiguration. His glory is so bright that the Bible says it will light up the Holy City. And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof (Revelation 21:23).
The Lord wants to make every child of God a soul winner. You’re a soul winner when you go to church and pray. When you have your mind on God, you’re helping pull down the anointings of God on the service; and that means everything.
Be Wise in the Lord
When God created Adam and Eve, He made them wise; and He warned them about the tree of death. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die (Genesis 2:16,17). God let them know that they would die if they went to the tree of death, or they would live forever under the tree of life; but they didn’t keep that wisdom.
People are still like that today—they don’t stay wise in the Lord. When many first get saved, they want to help everybody receive salvation; but then they fall into lukewarmness and lose their vision of the lost. The Lord said, Where there is no vision, the people perish (Proverbs 29:18). People receive spiritual vision when they’re saved, but they have to keep it. Those without vision will eventually die without God.
Noah Remained True
Study how God used the wise in the Old Testament. Until the Lord began giving me this message, I’d never considered all the souls God had helped His different saints to win. Noah is a great example for us to follow because he and his family were obedient to God for 120 years, and their dedication saved them. The Bible says that God was going to destroy all mankind from the face of the earth, but Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD (Genesis 6:8). Noah found favor, and he took on the wise Spirit of God concerning lost souls. He and his family had separated from the world; and to be a good soul winner, you must separate into God’s love, God’s faith and God’s grace.
Noah worked all those years not only to save himself but also to save his family. He preached for 120 years without one soul coming to the Lord; but Noah’s work was great, and his reward will be tremendous. You need to study Noah when you’re discouraged or impatient or when you think that God isn’t moving for you like He should. Noah has encouraged me so many times, and I know he’ll share the reward of all the souls who have been and will be won for the Lord by this ministry. Noah did exactly what God told him to do, and his household was saved. When we obey God, we’re making the way for souls to be born into the Kingdom so they can live forever in Heaven.
Noah and his family had great zeal, but they had God’s knowledge to go with it. To have zeal without knowledge is dangerous because it can lead to fanaticism. People without godly wisdom and knowledge don’t have tact, so they can’t make proper contact with souls. You have to have the tact and the wisdom of God before you can make contact with souls in the right way.
Look at the souls who have come to God these thousands of years through Noah’s obedience, but what would have happened if he had given up? There would have been no three-story ark—representing Father, Son and Holy Ghost—and no salvation for the Noah family. Today, Jesus is our ark—are you in that ark? It has just one door. Jesus said, I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture (John 10:9). This refers to soul winning.
Abraham Believed God
It takes a sacrificial spirit to win souls, and Abraham had that spirit; but his wife, Sarah, did not. She failed God, and she caused Abraham to make the biggest mistake of his life. She convinced him to go in unto her handmaid because she didn’t think God would give her the son He had promised. Now Sarai Abram’s wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai (Genesis 16:1,2). When Sarah found out that Hagar was going to have a child, she was so jealous that she dealt harshly with Hagar and caused her to run away. Then an angel of the Lord visited Hagar in the wilderness and said, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction. And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren (Genesis 16:10-12).
Ishmael was the beginning of the Arab race, and the Arabs and the Jews have been at war ever since. They have been fighting for about 6000 years, and it will continue right into the Tribulation Period. The devil caused Sarah to suggest what she did, and he tricked Abraham into listening to her. About twelve years later, Sarah’s promised seed did come. If she had waited on God, it would have saved her people from a lot of trouble and wars. It doesn’t pay to fail God.
Abraham Was Faithful
Although Abraham listened to Sarah, he never doubted God’s promise. Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness (Romans 4:3). He became the father of the faithful. He had so much faith that when God called on him to offer his young son, Isaac, Abraham went forward to obey God. And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him (Genesis 22:1-3). Abraham obeyed because he knew Isaac was his promised seed; and he knew that if he killed him, God would have to raise him up.
Abraham took his servants only part of the way and then left them at the foot of Mount Moriah saying, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you (Genesis 22:5). That was faith!
Here, Isaac is a type of Jesus as he carried the wood for the fire. Then Isaac said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son (Genesis 22:7-13).
God had provided a lamb; but the Bible says in the New Testament that Abraham had offered Isaac in spirit, meaning it was the same as if he had really done it. By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had re-ceived the promises offered up his only begotten son, Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure (Hebrews 11:17-19). Abraham had such great faith, and that’s the same faith we are to have today.
Lot Warned of God’s Judgment
Abraham’s nephew Lot became a wonderful soul winner because he was a righteous man. He lived in the ungodly city of Sodom with his wife and their two daughters. His daughters lived for God, but they were married to ungodly men who didn’t believe Lot when he warned them that Sodom and Gomorrah were going to be destroyed. And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law (Genesis 19:14). They wouldn’t heed Lot’s warning, so they perished and are in hell today.
Lot’s wife also loved the sin of the city; but it meant death, and she didn’t have sense enough to know it. She did start to flee the cities, and two angels pulled her along; but her heart was still back in the sin of the city. And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city. Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt (Genesis 19:15,16,24-26).
Lot’s wife wasn’t living right, and she loved the sins of those two cities. Many church members throughout the world today love sin, too. They’re not members of the Jesus Church; they’re members of the world church which teaches nobody can live free from sin. But the Bible says, The soul that sinneth, it shall die (Ezekiel 18:4).
Listen Only to God
Lot’s wife is in hell today, and the Lord wants us never to forget that! Jesus said, Remember Lot’s wife (Luke 17:32). That should encourage you to go on with God no matter what. You can’t let anything or anybody discourage you; you have to go on and work for God. The Bible tells us, Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell (Matthew 10:28).
If your husband or wife won’t live for God, don’t listen to them. They may say, “If you loved me, you’d stay home with me.” But you should say, “If you loved me, you’d go to church with me.” Put it back in their court and stay with God.
Thank God, Lot followed the Lord. His story has helped bring many people to God, and I’m sure he’ll get a reward for all the souls who have been won. The two angels leading him and his family were types of the Word and the Holy Ghost. They were there to direct them, and they’re here to direct us, too. We have nothing to fear and nothing to worry about.
Lot’s righteous soul was vexed with what was going on around him. Lot, [was] vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day today with their unlawful deeds;) (II Peter 2:7,8). Our souls must be vexed with the world around us today, too. We can’t go to most sports events anymore because they’re full of people who cuss and carry on. Most movies aren’t fit for Christians to watch, either, because they’re filled with filthy language and sex. Those who are into pornography in any way will be spewed right into the Tribulation Period. How sad!
The Bible says that at one time God winked at ignorance because people didn’t have the divine blood like we have it today; they didn’t have a Calvary or the revelation of sins as the Gospel of Jesus teaches. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent (Acts 17:30). Israel, for example, rejected God when He spoke to them in His own voice from Mount Sinai. And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die (Exodus 20:19). The people didn’t want God to ever speak to them again; they didn’t want to hear His voice. Why?—Because they hadn’t been living right. Many of them had been worshipping idol gods, and God’s voice scared them.
Job Is an Inspiration
Job was another great soul winner. He sanctified his children daily by bringing them before the Lord just in case they might have done something against God. There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters. And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually (Job 1:1,2,5). Later, they were all killed; but Job had made sure they were right with God, and because of that they’re in Heaven with him today.
Job’s wife, on the other hand, was not saved; and Job let her know that she talked like a sinner. Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die. But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips (Job 2:9,10). It’s sad that she offered him no encouragement in his time of need.
Look at Job’s three so-called friends—they were supposed to have been comforting him, but instead they sat for days without saying a word. Then all they said was, “Job, you must have sinned. Come on and fess up.” I would have run them off, but Job let them stay. When you have friends like that, you definitely don’t need any enemies!
Job went through so much, but he could still say, My witness is in heaven, and my record is on high (Job 16:19). For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God (Job 19:25,26). Job wanted everyone to hear that; and he cried, Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book! That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock forever (Job 19:23,24)! Job’s words were written in the Word of God, and that was far greater than having them written in any rock because all people could never have gone to read an inscription on a rock. Job’s words were really written by Christ Jesus, the Rock of our salvation; and that Rock is available to the whole world.
Through all his trials, Job stood and won. But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold (Job 23:10). Job did come forth as gold, and we must, too.
It’s Time to Work
Job has been a real inspiration to me. The Lord has used his life to help me take on the divine patience that Jesus made available to all of us, and that patience is what it takes to be a godly soul winner. We must have a voice of divine patience, love and faith to convince people to come to Jesus. We have to know when to talk and when to shut up because we don’t have to preach a sermon to people in order to win them.
Many times, you will have just a matter of moments to get a person’s attention; and just one statement or clause is usually all it takes for the Holy Spirit to convict a lost soul. He’ll turn that thought over and over in the person’s mind to get their attention. Then when the light of God flashes, divine love is reaching out for them; and it’s time to pray. Don’t talk conviction on people and then not pray with them; that’s the time to sweep them in.
We must take Jesus to the world before it’s too late. The Antichrist is already born and living on earth today, and he’s manifesting himself all over the world. People reject God just as those in the wicked, old kingdom of Babylon did whom Daniel told about…and they’re getting closer to the gates of hell all the time. Daniel told the devilish king of Babylon, The God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified (Daniel 5:23). That same accusation is being brought against many people all over the world today. But the Lord said this day would come. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away [from the truth] first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition (II Thessalonians 2:3). We can’t let this discourage us; we have to take another look at Noah and then continue to preach and teach the Gospel.
We have to keep heart even when people turn away from God. At one time, everybody had left Jesus except the twelve apostles. Multitudes of people had been following Him; but when He said something they didn’t like or believe, they turned away from Him. And he [Jesus] said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him (John 6:65,66). The people wouldn’t accept that Jesus was the Son of God, that His flesh was the Word and His divine blood was life, so they left Him; and they were headed for hell. People have done that down through the years, and they’re still leaving God behind today.
Judgment Is Near
The end is coming, and the Bible tells us that we are the Rapture generation. When ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors (Mark 13:29). Jesus is at the door, and He’s our escape. When that door flies open, the Bride will be taken out; and when that door closes, it will be tribulation. There will be only chaos for those who are left behind, and we’re warning people about it day and night.
The Bible says that the Lord is only coming for those who are watching. Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching…Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not (Luke 12:37,40). We can get out of here, but we have to help others to get out, too. We must cry, “Come to Jesus! Come to Jesus!”
I had a vision many years ago; and in it, I was holding my Bible as I waded through crowds and crowds of people. I didn’t know at the time that they represented the nations of the world gathered together. I didn’t have a microphone on, but my voice was sounding out everywhere. I was crying, “Come to Jesus! Come to Jesus!” But when I started to speak again, the words froze in my throat; and then the Lord took over. He told the people, “I don’t want you. I gave you a chance, but you didn’t take it. I don’t care how much you cry and pray; I don’t want you now, and I’ll never want you again.”
The Lord told us, I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh (Proverbs 1:26). Then the Lord gave me a startling statement. He said, “I can hate as much as I can love.”
Gideon Wanted God’s Way
Gideon had a sincere heart before God. The Lord thought so much of him that He sent an angel to him with this message, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour. And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of (Judges 6:12,13)? People need to ask themselves this same question today: Where are the miracles? I grew up in a home with miracles, and I attended a church with miracles. My parents loved God, and they wanted to receive everything He had for them. People either want God or they don’t want God.
Although Gideon had heard about miracles in the past, he had never seen one; but God was going to show him one great miracle because he was obedient. Gideon wanted God’s way, so he put out a fleece before the Lord concerning what they should do about the enemy. And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said, Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said. And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water. And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew. And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground (Judges 6:36-40).
I’ve used fleeces myself. They worked for Gideon, and I’ve received more than one answer that way. Like Gideon, you can put a fleece out in several different ways until you’re satisfied.
God Moved through Gideon
First, the Lord told Gideon that he had too many soldiers. And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me. Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand. And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go. So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink. And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water. And the LORD said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand (Judges 7:2-7).
Gideon had only 300 soldiers left, so this would have been a trial of his faith; but he still obeyed God. And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand. And it was so…and [Gideon] returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the LORD hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian (Judges 7:9,15). Gideon became a great soul winner because he saved his people from destruction.
Esther Gave Her Life
Queen Esther was another mighty soul winner who saved her people, but she had to put her life on the line. No one was allowed to go in before the king unless they were called, but she knew it was the only chance for her people. So she told Mordecai, her uncle, to go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish (Esther 4:16).
As with Queen Esther, my life is on the line for souls. When I can no longer win souls, I don’t want to live. I’ve never asked God to make me rich in dollars and cents; I just want to be rich in soul winning, and God has done just that for me. He gathers thousands of souls together in my overseas crusades, and I watch them come to God. I sow the Word and reap the harvest in moments of time.
Daniel Never Stopped Praying
Daniel was a great prophet in the eyes of the Lord. He never grumbled or complained, but a lot of people in his condition would have. He was a slave, and his captors made him a eunuch. His manhood was destroyed, and he could never marry; but he didn’t blame God, and he served Him with all of his heart.
The laws of the land didn’t allow him to pray to the God he loved, but that didn’t stop Daniel. He opened up his window three times a day and looked toward Jerusalem from whence he had come, and he prayed to the Lord. Soon, men who hated what Daniel stood for reported him to the king. That Daniel, which is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition [to the Lord] three times a day (Daniel 6:13). The king liked Daniel, and he didn’t want to punish him; but he couldn’t change his decree. Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions. And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions? Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live forever. My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt (Daniel 6:16,19-22).
Daniel is the only person in the whole Word of God whom we find spending the night in a den of hungry lions, and they didn’t even bite him. But when Daniel’s accusers were thrown in, the lions devoured them. And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den (Daniel 6:24).
Judgment fell; but Daniel lived on, and so did all of his prophecies. Some of them have already been fulfilled; others are being fulfilled today, and the rest will be fulfilled on tomorrow. There has never been a greater prophet than Daniel, and all the prophecies he delivered have brought many, many people to God.
The Hebrew Boys Wouldn’t Bow
We must never forget the Hebrew boys. They were the first human beings on earth to see Jesus, besides Adam and Eve; and it’s hard to tell how many souls have turned to righteousness through them standing and not compromising. The boys refused to worship King Nebuchadnezzar’s gods or the golden image he had set up, so he commanded that they be thrown into the fiery furnace. Therefore he [the king] spake, and commanded that they should heat the furnace one seven times more than it was wont to be heated. And he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. Then these men were bound in their coats, their hosen, and their hats, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. Therefore because the king’s commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God (Daniel 3:19-25).
The furnace was so hot that it killed the men who threw the boys in, but the flames didn’t hurt the Hebrew boys. They only burned the ropes that they had been tied with, and the fourth Man, Jesus, was with them.
How many do you see when you look into your furnace of trials? I always see four; I see Jesus day and night. The Bible tells us we can see Him through faith, and He promised to always be with us. Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world (Matthew 28:20). The consecration, dedication and separation of the Hebrew boys have meant so much to me and have helped me to be the soul winner I am today. I don’t compromise with the devil or man in any way.
Joseph Had the Spirit of Jesus
Joseph was another soul winner who paid a great price. Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce him; and when he resisted, she lied about what had happened. And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth, That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice (Genesis 39:13,14). Her lies sent Joseph to prison for a very long time.
While he was there, he helped several of his fellow prisoners; but they soon forgot him after they were freed. But God had a plan; He was preparing Joseph to be second only to Pharaoh in the land of Egypt. He had to have a forgiving spirit just like the one Jesus brought to earth; and we all must have it, too, or we’ll miss Heaven. We have to be humble to be soul winners. We can’t argue with people or be grouchy and expect to win souls.
You can’t hold a grudge or keep things in your heart against people and make it to Heaven. You win souls by being like Jesus, by using His love, His faith and His divinity. You either have Jesus love or the devil’s hate; there’s no in-between. Don’t let deceit take you over and make you think you’ll get by because you definitely won’t.
King Saul thought he could get by in deceit, but it didn’t work. He died in his deceit; and that was sad because as a young man, he had been made a brand-new person. And it was so, that when he [Saul] had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart (I Samuel 10:9). God had given Saul a new heart and changed him completely.
Hear the Voice of Jesus
There are many other soul winners in the Old Testament, but let’s move on now to the New Testament. Paul never met Jesus in the flesh; but hearing His voice just one time changed him completely, and he was never the same man. And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do (Acts 9:4-6)?
The voice of Jesus is really something to hear. John the Revelator heard it and described it as the voice of many waters (Revelation 14:2). John always had great love for Jesus. Next to Paul, he wrote more of the New Testament books than anybody else; and they were all books full of love.
Jesus came with the voice of Heaven, and the sick heard His voice and were healed of all kinds of deadly diseases. And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them (Matthew 4:24).
The lepers heard His voice, and they were cleansed. And as he [Jesus] entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed (Luke 17:12-14).
Lazarus was dead; but he heard Jesus’ voice, and it raised him up. They took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid…[Then Jesus] cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go (John 11:41,43,44).
Jairus’ daughter heard His voice, and it brought her to life. And he [Jesus] took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise. And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment (Mark 5:41,42).
Jesus, the Soul Winner
Jesus used divine wisdom to win many souls. He told Nicodemus, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God (John 3:3).
Jesus was never too weary to win a soul. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw (John 4:6-15).
This should be a great lesson to us—we can never be too weary to tell souls about Jesus and to give them the light of the Gospel through the story of the Old Rugged Cross. We must always be ready for them, and you can never give up on them unless God gives up on them. My associate pastors who go into the prisons overseas have just a limited amount of time to share the Gospel with the prisoners. Those who hear the voice of God will be saved, and others will read the literature and hear that voice after they’re gone.
A Voice of Power and Strength
Jesus delivered the devil possessed; they heard His voice, and the devils went out of them. Devils knew that Jesus just had to speak the word, and they’d be cast into hell ahead of time. Jesus met two men possessed with many devils; and the devils in them cried, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time (Matthew 8:29)? Devils know when they’re bound for hell.
I look to God for my voice to be used in the same way. When I command the devils to go out of crowds of people, thousands at a time will flee like defeated armies. I can see them as they move out across the people; and they’re being led, no doubt, to the pits of hell.
The voice of God can be so peaceful and have great strength, or it can be one of judgment; but it will ring in one way or another for all eternity. The dead in Christ will hear His voice and come forth on the Resurrection Morn. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first (I Thessalonians 4:16). The wicked dead will then come forth 1007 years later. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works (Revelation 20:12,13). The wicked will hear only God’s voice of judgment as they are brought before His throne. They could have received their judgment at the Cross, but they didn’t want it then. Those who do humble themselves at the Cross will never have to worry about judgment again because they know that Jesus hung on it in their place.
Never Give Up on a Soul
I remember being so tired and weary one night when a man desperately wanted my help. I wished it could have been some other night, but I never say no to a soul. He was a backslider; and at first, he was in such bad shape that he didn’t want the truth. But I kept hammering away with God’s love and truth until he fell apart in the arms of Jesus and was gloriously saved.
I knew he needed to go on and receive the Holy Ghost baptism to be able to live pure and holy; so I prayed for him, and the Lord knocked him down to the floor. I kept him there praising the Lord until he received a baptism that not only satisfied him but also one that satisfied me. When he finally got up, he was lit up with the glory of the Lord; and he’s still living for God today. That’s soul winning!
When I was at theological school, one of the boys became very discouraged; he wanted to give up on God and the ministry. A small group of dedicated students gathered around him in the boys’ dormitory, and we started praying for him; but he didn’t want to pray. We were determined to get him out of that condition and back to where he should have been with God; so against his will, we picked him up and carried him to the administration building. Once there, we started praying with him, and we wouldn’t let him go until he sought God and prayed through to the Holy Ghost. I saw him again years later, and he was preaching and still living for God.
Soul Winning Takes Sacrifice
You have to sacrifice to be a soul winner. You have to be separated, consecrated and dedicated; and you have to be willing to give your time to the Lord and to souls. My mother was a real soul winner. People would ask her at all hours to go and pray for somebody, and she never refused. Mama knew how to help people receive miracles for their bodies and salvation for their souls; but she dedicated herself in prayers and fastings, and she was always ready and willing to help. Mama declared that with every sacrifice, she always received a blessing in return.
The night God saved me, He gave me great compassion for lost souls; and He also gave me the mind of Jesus. When the sinful Ernest Angley finally died, I found such happiness and joy in the Lord that I was willing to sacrifice anything for Him.
When God called me on my first forty-day fast, I thought it would be my only one; but there have been many more since that one. Forty days is a long time to go without eating, but I have received so much power with God through each fast; and that makes all the sacrifice worthwhile. Jesus said, This kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21).
After Jesus went to Heaven, His disciples fasted. Paul said he was in fastings often (II Corinthians 11:27), and look at the power from God that he had. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it (Matthew 16:24,25).
Captives Must Be Set Free
Ask yourself today, “Am I a real Bible soul winner?” It’s the will of God for you to be His soul winner like Noah, Abraham, Joseph and Job were. There’s a special, mighty anointing for it; but you have to live God’s way in order to receive it. It is the greatest anointing that you can ever receive after you’re saved and filled with the Holy Ghost. It brings great joy and gladness and enables you to stand in the presence of God and declare like Jesus did, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord (Luke 4:18,19).
God has anointed me to preach the Gospel, heal the sick and set the captives free. The devil can’t keep anyone in captivity who lives free from all sin. Many preachers won’t preach that message, yet they claim to be soul winners; however, they don’t have the only true light from Heaven that can bring people to God.
We must be sanctified and holy in this last hour so the Lord can come every day to help us and give us the anointings we need. True soul winners are members of the bridal company, and they are glorious and pure before Him. That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish (Ephesians 5:27). That means we can’t have one sin.
The Bible says, For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23). If you willfully sin after you’re saved, the Bible tells you that Jesus is no longer the Sacrificial Lamb who stands between you and judgment. For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries (Hebrews 10:26,27).
When we’re saved, our judgment takes place at the Cross; and the verdict is pardoned through the blood of the Sacrificial Lamb. Then Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father making intercession for us. It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us (Romans 8:34).
Become a Soul Winner
Sinner, if you want Jesus to make intercession for you, then you must give your heart to Him. You can turn your back on God, or you can realize that He really died for you and receive Him. You just have a limited number of opportunities; and when you turn an opportunity down, it could be your very last one. Don’t be left outside Heaven’s gates; turn yourself over to the Lord today.
Oh, God, I am here to confess that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. I know that He died for me, and I’m going to live for Him. I confess that I’ve sinned, and I’m on the road to hell. But I know there’s a Heaven to go to, and I want to be there. I believe the blood of Jesus saves me and delivers me from all sin. Come into my heart, Jesus! Come in!
If you meant that prayer, now you can say, Hallelujah, Jesus is mine! Prayer, fasting and living in the Word—if you follow these three steps consistently, they will keep you on the highway to Heaven; and one day Heaven will be yours.
Claim the Promise
And now, you who are sick and afflicted, reach out and claim God’s promises of miracles and healings. You who have HIV/AIDS or any other deadly disease, the blood of Jesus will heal you of anything if you’ll just look to Him.
Lord, I bring the sick and afflicted to you. Lay a healing hand on them. Jesus, cure all deadly diseases in their bodies—cancer, diabetes, heart trouble, lung trouble and paralysis. Heal the little, deformed children who were born with just part of a brain; give them a whole brain and the power to walk. You’ve done this again and again, Lord. In the holy name of the Lord, deliver them. Heal! in the all-powerful blood-name of Jesus.
Now, get well in the name of Jesus, but you must serve the Lord and live for Him. The Lord healed sinners when He was here on earth, but He told them to go, and sin no more (John 8:11).
Now you can join us in crying for souls wherever we go. That’s our mission, and God is using us with His miracle power to set the people free. God bless.
