Remember Lot’s Wife
by Ernest Angley
December 1987
Remember Lot’s wife (Luke 17:32). These words of Jesus appear simple, but on closer examination we begin to see the profoundness of them. Lot’s wife lived in an hour immediately prior to the destruction of a group of people. We, too, live in the hour just before destruction. Study her carefully; she was offered much in this world, just as you are offered much. Before God sends judgment He always offers much to mankind. This is the hour of Sodom, Gomorrah, of Noah’s day. Jesus told us about this hour, and for a long time we couldn’t comprehend it. Tribulation is coming. The Antichrist is on his way. The world in the near future will behold him. The nations are not going to have peace. There will be wars and rumors of wars, earthquakes in places they have never been before, calamity will fall in unusual places…tornadoes, ferocious storms.
Never has Lucifer fought the way he is fighting the plan of God now. He is determined to defeat the winning of souls, but God has raised up a mighty hand; He will trample demons underfoot. No power can stand before the power of God.
Many nations will feel the impact of the presence and the power of the Lord. God is bringing deliverance to multitudes, offering an escape from the Great Tribulation Period. He is offering all the mercy of Calvary in one great cup that will fill the whole world—and then the end will come. With all of His love, all His power God is speaking; and whosoever-will can come to Him in this hour just before destruction. Mercy, mercy, mercy is yours for this hour, mercy soon to be displaced by furious storm clouds of darkness opening to rain judgment upon the earth. For a short time now, God is pouring out the greatness of His love, His happiness, His goodness and mercy.
Lot’s wife was offered the joy of Heaven, the peace, the contentment of Heaven; but she heard a call she would not accept: Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord (II Corinthians 6:17). You have the same calling. The Lord is calling you forth: Come ye out from among them and be ye separate. And I will bless you, and I will walk with you.
Just as two angels went into Sodom on the eve of its destruction to bring out Lot’s wife, to show her the danger she was in, to convince her to move and move quickly, the Holy Spirit is seeking to warn you. But the minds of some, not working through the Holy Spirit, reject the fact that the coming of the Lord is nigh at hand to take God’s children out of destruction.
The Earth Will Reel Like a Drunkard
The nations are preparing for the final battle, the Battle of Armageddon; and some of you know it not. The angels worked hard to convince Lot’s wife that she must move and move quickly, that she was drowsy, that the midnight hour was upon her, and if she fell asleep in such an hour she would be destroyed. The Holy Spirit is working with you in the same way. The Word and the Holy Spirit are here today to separate you, to take you out of the world, to preserve you and keep you safe.
The call of God is upon you. The Lord is calling you to His holiness, to the greatness of Him. The great I-Am is sending out a desperate call, giving you a personal invitation in the name of His Son Jesus, warning you to flee the wrath of God. God is letting us know the hour, shaking the earth in diverse places, raining judgments from the skies again and again…volcanoes in America, earthquakes in the Midwest…who would have thought it? Judgment is at our door. Natural disasters are just one way the Lord is warning us today, but they are nothing like the judgments written about in the Bible when the angel sounds and the earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly. The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage (Isaiah 24:19,20). Revelation tells us that in the Tribulation Period an earthquake so devastating will occur that all cities of every nation will be destroyed. The Holy Spirit is pulling on us to get us out before total havoc.
No Looking Back
Cut your love-ties to the world. Remember Lot’s wife. Although God sent two angels to bring her out of the pathway of destruction, she came unwillingly. The angels even had her by the hand, pulling her out of the city; but she wanted to love what she had left behind. She turned away from the urgency of the Spirit, determined to look back. Warned, told what to do, she loved self more than obedience to God.
We are instructed by God what to do in this hour; we have His Holy Word to follow.
Jesus said, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God (Luke 9:62). In other words, if we start out for God and then look back to the world we are not fit for the Kingdom. There’s no looking back when it comes to serving God, no time to fail. Angels had come to Lot’s family; his wife should have been dedicating herself, consecrating herself in that hour of visitation.
Angels are ministering to people on planet Earth today. The ministry of angels is a wonder as they work with the Holy Spirit to get us out of here. Judgment is on its way; Sodom is about to be destroyed, all hell about to boil over. What preparations are you making?
Oh, yes, Lot’s wife was quite comfortable in the lifestyle of her neighbors. She didn’t believe the place would be destroyed; her faith had been contaminated with the sins of Sodom, with the concern of others. It had settled upon her: the doubt, the unbelief. No longer could she believe what God had said. No doubt at one time she believed God. Had God sent angels to rescue her at that time she would have responded with faith, but now she doesn’t have the will to turn away from the world.
Think how the Spirit of God must have surrounded Lot’s family at this time. The mocking of the sons-in-law sent chills over anyone truly in love with God. One would have thought such outright contempt for God would have brought Lot’s wife to her senses as quickly as a bucket of ice water would wake a sleeping person. It didn’t. Part of her agreed with them. Loving Sodom’s loose morals, she didn’t have the will to stand for God any longer.
Do you try to see how close to the world you can walk and still be fit for Heaven? Many have done the same thing, and many are in hell today because of it.
The Divine Mission of the Bride
This is no day to walk close to the edge; it’s a time to get as far away from the world as you can, a time to find that Secret Place of the Most High. Under the wings of the Almighty is your place of rest and refuge. Decide that the Lord is your refuge and you will not let your heart be troubled nor afraid. The Lord is the High Tower of your life, your strength, your shield, your buckler.
Put your whole trust—not just a part of it but all of it—in the Lord. Believe what He is saying, what the Spirit of God is telling you, that through the darkness of the night the Bride of Christ is working to bring the Light, to find every little lost lamb she can. The midnight hour is almost here; and the Bride is going forth in the name of Jesus, letting everything go but the work of the Master. She must find those little lost lambs; the Spirit is letting her hear their cry as Heaven hears it. She rises up all hours to pray, to fast, to seek the face of her Lord. She knows it won’t be long until her Lord will come, that she is close to the time when that midnight cry will go forth. She must hurry.
The compelling urgency of the hour spurs on the Holy Spirit today as it did the two angels who saved Lot and his daughters from destruction. The angels were aware of what was about to happen; they weren’t in darkness. They knew their mission. The Bride knows her mission today, that it is a divine mission for God, one that sets her apart from those around her. She knows her garments cannot be spotted with the sins of this old world, she knows, she knows. She is not drunk on the pleasures of this world but is feasting, dining, at the table of the Lord. Filled and thrilled with the Holy Spirit, the Bride is bubbling over with the joy of that great event about to take place just before judgment—the Rapture of the Bride of Christ. Hearing the voice of her Lord, she realizes that redemption draweth nigh. Her Master, her Savior, her Shepherd urges her on; and she goes forth leaving all fear behind as she receives His greatness and adorns herself with His love and faith. The fragrance of Jesus is upon her. The Bride is not carried away by the pleasures of sin; she has turned her back on the world, crying, “Take the whole world but give me Jesus!” Seeking, searching daily to learn more about Jesus, she wants that close communion. She walks hand in hand with Jesus as her heart cries out, “Where He leads me I will follow. I’ll go with Him all the way!”
Our Most Trying Hour
Remember Lot’s wife; compare her to the Bride. Lot’s wife was so very close to deliverance…and yet she missed it. Many will almost make the Rapture, but not quite. Many will start to yield as they feel the Spirit pulling on them; however, going part way with the Spirit is not enough. They will fail and be left, left to endure the destruction that will pour down from God’s Heaven. To be here when the wrath of God is poured out will be horrible indeed!
You do not know the hour you have entered. This will be the most trying hour you have ever faced since coming into God’s Kingdom. Some of you are failing; some of you have not made yourself ready—you know you are not ready. You are not really expecting Jesus to come or you would prepare.
You must seek His face, live in His Word that you might overcome. You will have to deny self like you have never, never denied self before. There must not be one tiny speck of self in the way, or the Holy Spirit will be hindered. Remember the darkness upon the earth…and it will grow greater and greater; but just before the great judgment, God’s power will fall upon the earth like mighty waters.
If you don’t know the way of the Lord thy God, you’ll become discouraged and fall by the wayside. Some of you will faint at the very moment God has great need of you. It’s time to reach out and plead to God for forgiveness, and then take up your cross to follow faithfully, closely after Him so that you will recognize His way, so that you will understand the hour in which you live.
Walk in the light of God’s love and you will know the season of the coming of the Lord—not the very moment but the season. We live in that season. All the end-time signs are in evidence now, witnesses for or against us. If we are following Jesus closely, if we are letting the Holy Spirit check our garments daily to make sure we are ready to go and will be counted worthy to be taken with Jesus at His coming, the signs are for us.
Jesus will come for His Bride just before the seven-year Tribulation Period begins; beware of anyone who teaches otherwise. You’re being tested and tried, but stay with the real Word of God. The Bible teaches that the Gentile dispensation will close with the taking out of the Bride of Christ. The Holy Spirit will leave with the Bride, and the earth will be open to the reign of the Antichrist.
Is Your Intelligence a Curse?
Lot followed the angels. Just as he left the city behind, we’re leaving this place of judgment, this world, and walking on with the Holy Spirit. God has Earth marked for a target of destruction. The two angels—the Holy Spirit and the Word of God—have come after us and we must move; we must come out of this place. God will not allow Satan to be covered in this final hour as he has been covered in the past. God will expose him, let people see his cunning, deceitful ways; and God will uncover Satan’s hate for mankind as He reveals His immense love for it. Again it will be man’s choice: the world or God’s righteousness.
Lot’s wife believed her sons-in-law who scoffed at the idea of God destroying Sodom. She thought they were intelligent, but without the Word of God intelligence is a curse. Lot’s wife chose the world. The angel pulled Lot’s wife out of the city. Her friends didn’t come, some of her family was still there—she thought they were right to remain. She wanted to go back and be with her friends, to her idea of an exciting way of life. She didn’t even know where the angels were leading her. She wondered if Lot knew. “Lot, where are we going? Daughters, you’re just as bad as your father! Where do you think we’re spending the night? Out there in the mountain somewhere?” Yes, they were going to be hidden safe in the Mountain of God. The Lord is our Mountain of Safety during the Tribulation Period.
Judgment Fell Suddenly
Remember Lot’s wife. She didn’t think the impending danger was real. Jesus talked about people like her in Luke 17:26-30, And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.
God took the Lot’s and the Noah’s out before destruction, and today God is going to take you out before the destruction who are totally yielded to God. You who are doubtful, full of unbelief, will be left.
The devil is doing everything he can to get your attention, to get your eyes off the Lord, to set your eyes on the enemy and what he is doing, what people are saying. The devil is trying to put weights of unbelief on you so that he can slow you down, hinder you, keep you from making the Rapture. He wants you here because he knows that if you miss the Rapture he has a good chance of possessing your soul. The Holy Ghost, having taken His flight in the Rapture, will not be here to help you. Lucifer is rising up with all his forces to try you like you have never been tried. This is a trying, testing hour. If you’re not being tried, it’s a good sign the devil already has you. But if you’re God’s child, look up; redemption draweth nigh.
A Trash Pile about to Explode
You’re going to be an oppressed people, a tried people, Jesus tells us. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world (John 16:33). We will be taken up out of great tribulation, out of a trying hour. If you were the devil and had only a brief time to work, wouldn’t you work hard? Know the methods of the enemy so you’ll not be deceived by him. Reach up and hold on to God. Know the hour you live in—and remember Lot’s wife. So much was offered her, and she turned it down for a trash pile about to explode. Looking back to see the flames, she, as well as Sodom, was destroyed. If you look back to the world in this hour you will be destroyed with it.
“Why, we have heard for ages that destruction was coming, and it hasn’t come yet,” some sneer. It hasn’t come because all the signs were not present; but now for the first time all the end-time signs have been fulfilled for both Jew and Gentile—the first time ever. The nations are getting ready for Armageddon, the final battle. They are taking their places now quickly. Russia is moving ever closer to the Holy Land, and the Bible tells that she will go down to Israel to take a spoil. When she does, however, God will spoil Russia. All but one-sixth of Russia’s army will be destroyed in the Holy Land. Ezekiel tells about it. All hell will break loose when Russia goes down on the Holy Land. Jehovah God will fight for the Jewish people. God has spoken it, and God cannot lie. Believe what you want—Lot’s wife did—but the Bible says, Redemption draweth nigh (Luke 21:28).
The voice of the Lord is calling a world from demonic power; demons will flee as that voice is lifted—but you can close your ears—and open them to the devil. Eve did. She just wanted to hear what Satan had to say in spite of the fact that she had been warned. You, too, have been warned to stay away from the forbidden fruit of the world. The forbidden fruit looks beautiful, and the devil whispers that it’s delicious, harmless, downright good for you. Doesn’t it look innocent? So does poison. People today with the innocent-looking forbidden fruit of false doctrine carry poison. Separate yourself from them.
Different ministers on television preach false doctrine mixed in with truth. Some don’t believe in hell; some think you cannot backslide, or that you cannot live without sinning. There are those who claim you can speak in tongues at your own will, not, as the Bible says, as the Holy Ghost gives utterance. Some think Christ was not born of a virgin, that His blood shed on the Cross has no meaning—these all are lies of the devil; and yet some of you invite the bearers of these lies into your kitchens, bedrooms, living rooms through the television. You let the devil bring his filth into your homes. God knows what will give you eternal life, and He is offering it to you. I have spent thousands of hours in His presence as He taught me His Word. If you want God’s greatness, you must go with Him, stay in His presence. Remember Lot’s wife. She had everything given to her, yet she pushed it aside for the glitter of the world. The Lord offered her the way out of destruction, but she allowed the devil to fool her. She chose a trash pile and was destroyed.
Vexation to a Righteous Soul
Thank God for faithful Lot! “If you don’t go, it won’t hinder me,” was his attitude. The Bible tells us that God, turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished (II Peter 2:6-9). Daily the righteous soul of Lot was vexed. He was sick and tired of the hellish mess he was living in, and the Lord knew how to deliver him out of temptation.
Many of us are sick and tired of the garbage around us. Some must work with people who blaspheme the name of the Lord, who have filthy minds and mouths. Our souls are vexed, for we want to be with our Lord. We want an atmosphere pure and clean around us.
Had you been Lot, would you have stood the test? Suddenly you saw your wife struck down with the judgment of God. Would you have gone on? Decide how much you’re going to pay, that if you have to sacrifice every member of your family—if every member of your family turns back—you’re going through. It doesn’t matter what others say, how much they vex your soul, how much they criticize. You’ve determined to take the whole will of the Lord. What if Lot had turned back to look, too? But he didn’t dare. He urged his daughters on.
The Spirit of God is bidding us to leave this old world behind with everything in it. Remember Lot’s wife. You who are doing little things you shouldn’t, you who are neglecting God in any way would do well to remember Lot’s wife every day that you have left. God is warning you through her.
God Offers You All the Strength of Heaven
When Jesus said to remember Lot’s wife, He was talking about His second coming when He will come to take us out of destruction. The Holy Spirit will help you to remember; the Holy Spirit will serve you the determination you need, the joy, the peace. He is beside you to prepare you to leave this world, just as the angels were there to bring out Lot’s family. All Heaven backing them up, Lot’s family received all the strength of God to bring them out. Today God is furnishing all the strength of Heaven to bring us out. Whosoever-will, come.
But God’s Spirit Will Not Always Strive with Man
Are you standing in the path of God’s judgment? His Spirit will not always strive with man, with woman. He will send them into endless darkness. They will never feel His love—only hate and fear. Lucifer knows he doesn’t have long, and he is working to destroy you—not, as a rule, with big things but little things, things so small that you hardly even notice. He is drugging some of you, putting you to sleep in this hour. You have no anointing to talk to the Lord your God, no anointing to learn what He has said in His Word, no anointing to fast, to draw close to Him. God is reaching out to you daily, seeking to draw you into His arms, to breathe upon you with love and grace, with strength; but your mind is too occupied. Your mind is on other things and you run away, seeking a world of your own making; and you go from His presence. He reaches out for you again and again, but you won’t yield to His touch. Lot’s wife didn’t yield, either.
This is your hour to walk with your God or to walk afar off and be destroyed. This is an hour in which the powers of darkness have been turned loose on the face of the earth, and the devil is working to deceive you. Some of God’s people are being made drunk on the cares of this world. The devil has their attention, and God can’t get through to them. The Holy Spirit calls and calls…no answer. One day the Spirit will say, “Sleep on”; but now the Spirit is crying to awake while there is yet time. Awake and let His power cleanse you of all deceit. Let His power that is in His Word anoint your eyes, anoint your ears. Don’t allow the enemy to deceive you as he deceived Lot’s wife.
All that the Lord has said in His Word will come to pass. When God warns that you will be destroyed if you don’t get rid of all deceit, you will be destroyed—and some much sooner than you think. God cannot use deceit. He cannot use vessels contaminated with deceit; only those yielded and cleansed by the blood of Jesus can He fill with love and deliverance to serve the people. Open your eyes and know that God keeps His word of judgment just as He keeps His word of salvation and deliverance.
And God will destroy.
Remember Lot’s wife.
Are you living on sinful ground? Are you partaking of any of the “sins of the city”? Is something in your life that you wouldn’t want people to know about? You can’t cover up one thing from God. All that Lot’s wife did was look back. One look. But one look to Calvary will give you life. Surrender everything to God.
God is calling you from all deceit; if you don’t let His power deliver you, you will be swept away by the powers of Lucifer. You cannot have any deceit in you, saith the Lord. You cannot cheat, you cannot lie, you cannot be unclean. God’s people are separated by the blood of Jesus, and His people cannot be contaminated with the spirit of Lucifer. My people must be pure and clean, saith the Lord. My people must be a holy people. God’s judgments will come; he will bring judgment to you if you don’t repent—and those judgments are nigh at hand. God will destroy all sin, all disobedience. God will destroy Lucifer, his demons and all of his works; and God will destroy all mankind that is defiled by Lucifer in any way. And there are no powers strong enough to hold anyone from me who wants me in this final hour, saith the Lord. Live in my presence. Walk humbly before me. Do not doubt any of my promises because they will all be fulfilled. This is my hour, and this is your hour, saith the Lord.
