Love Went to Golgotha
by Ernest Angley
November 1998
Love traveled many thousands of miles in Old Testament days but reached only few because only few accepted that Love. Israel would not accept the love of God for any length of time. If the history of Israel were not in the Bible, it would be hard to believe. Yet it is a true story of a disobedient people who for the most part often traveled without love and finally rejected the love of Jesus Christ. Nevertheless, the love of Jesus took Him to Golgotha for all who would believe Him to be the only begotten Son of God. His love today is still going to Golgotha in the lives and hearts of those who glory in that great sacrificial love.
Don’t Travel without Divine Love
If you travel without divine love you will never be used by God in any great way. Jesus brought His ultimate love for us to use; He used it, and you can use it, too. Without His love you hinder rather than help, tying the hands of God. Traveling without His love, you will not grace and bless the Kingdom of God. If you travel without His love, you travel without the Lord; you do not act like Him or talk like Him. But when you are full of love, overwhelmed with His love, you travel in love, God’s supernatural love.
Fall in Love with Jesus
Nothing can be compared to falling in love with Jesus. His love is the greatest thing that could ever happen to anyone. I am persuaded that many people have not really received salvation because they have not really fallen in love with Jesus. Many have been deceived about salvation, about love, about the grace of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. They have been deceived in the ability of grace, in what grace performs in each life that comes to the Cross of Calvary. Love that went to Golgotha brought the promise of salvation and eternal life to whosoever will.
Matthew 27:33-36, And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. And sitting down they watched him there. With the scorn of the devil’s unbelief, wicked men watched Jesus. Giving themselves over to hatred, they were the devil’s haters, mocking that incredible love Jesus displayed on Calvary. They had been offered the love-gift of God, but they put it to scorn. Do you think that most of the people who in scorn watched Jesus die made it to Heaven? In hell they lifted up their eyes.
Be Strong in Love
Christians are strong only when they are strong in love. If you are not strong in love, neither are you strong in grace, in the blood of Jesus or in the Word of God and His truth. If you don’t submit to love daily, you give hatred, resentment, unforgiveness and bitterness the opportunity to creep in. Whenever you tolerate anything the devil serves, you are weak. By leaving God’s love and the blood of Jesus out of your heart, you leave out everything of importance. The blood of Jesus will not work daily in your life unless the love of Jesus is working daily in it, also. You must have the blood-love, the love that went to Golgotha.
God gave Heaven’s brightest jewel when He gave us Jesus Christ. He had no more love to give, and He can never give anything greater. God gave everything He had…and it was rejected by millions of people who died and are in hell today.
Many people will come to the other side of life’s journey and suddenly find they have been fooled and it’s too late to change. Their friends and loved ones think they went to Heaven, but they didn’t get in. How pathetic! It’s only through God’s love that people can lift up holy hands to Him. I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting (I Timothy 2:8).
The Love Foundation
Having no love for Jesus, a person will never get through the gate of glory. That gate is one of love, and nothing but God’s love and the blood of Jesus applied to your heart can get you through it. You will never reach Heaven without the blood-love of Jesus. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ (I Corinthians 3:11). What a foundation of greatness is Jesus, a foundation of pure love straight from Heaven! How could anyone build on a love foundation and not have love in his heart? How could anyone build on a love foundation if he indulges in any malice, envy or strife at all?
No Love Language in Hell
Unless you have love you can’t speak like Jesus; your conversation is not in Heaven. For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:20). Our language is to be a heavenly language, the language of love. Love is the same in every language. For all time and eternity the love language will be spoken, but there will be no love language in hell, in the eternal night of darkness.
Beautiful flowers, green grass, lovely vegetables, the sky, the stars, the moon are all manifestations of God’s love for the human race. None of it came from the devil. God is love. The devil is full of hatred. He even hates the demons under him and tortures them in every way he can; he despises the fallen angels. The devil hates his own. Human beings who yield to the devil are detested by him; he knows what a blunder they commit by rejecting their chance at Heaven. The devil hates—and God loves.
A Bundle of Love
God’s love is so great that one day He so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16). God so loved, He so loved…Jesus was a gift from God’s greatest love, from the mountain peak of God’s love. At last Love had come, that bundle of love in the form of the Babe of Bethlehem, Love that would go to Golgotha. How many looked into that manger and saw Heaven and all its benefits? How many looked in and saw their Savior, their Redeemer, their Messiah? How many looked into that manger and knew they were seeing the heart of God? In a beautiful way the shepherds came into the knowledge of the Babe who was the Christ. They saw and heard a multitude of heavenly host glorifying God, and they rejoiced in the message. When you accept the message of the Lord, you, too, through faith can look into the manger and see the greatness of the Lord. The shepherds looked and knew they saw the King.
Love Draws Wise Men
The wise men set out to worship the King. From far countries they traveled in all kinds of weather. If the love of Heaven had not been in their hearts, had they not been drawn to see Jesus, they would not have kept journeying; they never would have believed. It took a lot of love to follow the star; and after they worshiped Jesus and gave gifts, they listened to the voice of God when He told them to go back home a different way and not report to Herod. They had the message from Heaven.
Nothing but Heaven’s message found in the Word of God will convince you of God’s love. You may say you are convinced, but if you don’t have Heaven’s message, you don’t have God’s love.
The heathen neither have God’s love nor Heaven’s message, for the devil has robbed them, kept them in darkness all these years. But now the light shineth. Throughout the whole earth, the Lord today is pouring out more love than ever before.
God’s prophets foresaw this hour we live in. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions (Joel 2:28). God’s Spirit of grace, power, strength and great, great love is now flowing. Accept nothing less than the best God has to offer, and that best is His pure love. If you don’t accept His pure love, He cannot serve His best to you in anything else.
Are You Being Robbed?
The devil seeks to rob you of as much of the love of God as he can. His plan is to contaminate your spirit, prevent you from realizing the value of God’s love and letting His love work. Resentment, envy, strife and unforgiveness among God’s people delight the devil; he tries in every way to inject discord whenever he can. Every little hurt and misunderstanding he can inflict are stumbling blocks that keep people from using God’s love.
Check yourself: See if you give over to love or to nitpicking. Start in your home. Do you complain about slights real or imagined? Are you offended by trifles? Do you become inflamed over things that really don’t matter? Are you hypersensitive, easily insulted when no insult is intended? If so, you are not using God’s love. When you really love a person, you don’t pay attention to every little imperfection.
In a real salvation experience, you walk in love. It matters not what others say or do. Carrying a part of Heaven within, you are wrapped up in the love of Jesus, taken up with Him. Everything else is secondary; you have too much of the love of God to pay attention to unimportant things.
Cover Irritations with Love
The devil would like to make you his watchdog, barking at every little irritation. Cover irritations with love, and refuse to take offense. Love ignores irritations; love is a covering. If you don’t have that covering, that needed love, you go cold in the Lord much of the time. Spiritually you are sick, suffering from a lack of love just as someone is physically ill when his body does not receive what it needs.
Many are sick or have died because they didn’t use God’s love. How sad not to use love that covers so much hurt. Instead of trying to even the score, reach for the cover of love.
My two older sisters had that love cover in our home. When she was sixteen, my sister “Pete” received the Holy Ghost and brought the light of the Holy Ghost into our family. When the rest of us children would be fussing or fighting about something, my sisters would cover it with love. They would say, “Oh honey, he didn’t mean anything by that,” or “they didn’t mean it the way it sounded.” At the time, their efforts vexed me because I didn’t want them to cover my fights with love. I just wanted to fight. I thought their blanket of love was out of order…and all the time I was the one out of order. Looking back on what they did, I see how beautifully they carried that love blanket. God’s great love was within them and it shined out.
A lot of people are like I was as a child; they don’t want a blanket of love; they want to squabble. Do you want a love blanket or do you want someone to be just as upset as you are? The devil is happy to support you anytime you feel it is your right to pick an argument with someone. The reason people create scenes with their anger is that they want attention. They get no satisfaction in going off to some secluded spot to have a fit. They want an audience. Other people would never dream of blowing up in front of those they work with, but when they come home, it’s a different story. Their family sees what’s coming and prays, Help us Jesus! Here they come again! The volcano is on its way. It’s eruption time.
Go back in your life and look at the times you have lost your temper. Has it always happened around certain people? Does anger soothe troubled souls? Love does. Does anger clothe the naked? Love does. Has spewing out contention ever taken anyone into Glory? Love has. Can an explosion of rage reach to Heaven? Love can. The important thing is to have love, God’s wonderful overcoming love.
Nothing More Powerful Than the Blood-Love of Christ
God has nothing stronger to give you than His love. In giving you His love, remember, He gave you Jesus. Jesus brought love, grace for you to use, so you could be close to Him. When you can walk hand in hand with Jesus Christ, marvelous things happen. Nothing is more powerful than the blood-love of Christ.
On the stormy deep, Jesus used love when He said, Peace be still! Wrap up in His love blanket, and peace begins to move within; you feel warm, secure. Every nerve, every muscle in you relaxes, and the calm comes.
Love can hear what God is saying. Because of love, the Bride will hear much in this final hour. Don’t mix or mingle with doubters; don’t listen to anyone before you put on the blanket of God’s love.
Unappreciated Love
Neither Adam nor Eve knew anything but love as long as they obeyed God. Imagine, if you can, what it would be like to never know anything but love, to have no idea what hatred was like or how distress and unpleasant things could affect you. You never heard a tragic story or suffered loss through sickness and death. You had no idea what sin was, never saw it in action. This was the love Adam and Eve lost in the Garden of Eden when they gave over to sin. They lost it for themselves and for the whole human race.
But because of the Love that went to Golgotha, everything lost in the fall of man either has been or else will be bought back. All the sin we have ever known is washed away in the blood when we take Jesus into our hearts. One day we will live in the second Eden where not only our sin, but also the knowledge of it and its results will be washed away. It will be a civilization completely free from sin, free just like the civilization of the first Adam, the first Eve. We are on our way, preparing to live in that Eden, but only those who accept God’s great love will live there.
Love went to Golgotha, love unappreciated. So often God’s love has been unappreciated even by Christians who cannot separate it from weak human love. They love God with human love only, not with God’s love. You might fake love, but you can’t actually love with a love you don’t have. If you don’t have a love for God, you don’t love holy living and the ways of God. Human ways are what you long for, and they pull you deeper and deeper into your own spirit, into deceit until you go the ways of Lucifer.
Love that went to Golgotha paid the price for the second Eden, an Eden with no forbidden fruit, no taunting devil. This second Eden will always be God’s. Organized according to His divine way, everything will be operated by God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost. To live in God’s love is marvelous. Never since Eden has there been such love for man to live in.
God’s Love Is Measureless
God’s love can’t be measured by weight, by capacity because the love of God has all the power, happiness, strength, vision, wisdom and greatness of Heaven. Although God’s love is measureless, it is so wonderful, so compact that it can be carried within the souls of men, women, boys and girls. There is no limit on how much love of God the soul can hold, for the soul came from God, and its capacity is unlimited. God’s love gives strength in place of weakness. Never will you bow under its weight because it removes weights. The love that went to Golgotha is measureless.
God’s Love Brings Understanding
It takes God’s love to understand His Word, God’s love to understand self. Some people think they are pleasing God when in reality they are only pleasing self, praying in self. They weigh their love for God with their own spirit and not with God’s Spirit. They pray for their own will to be done, not God’s will. Instead of praying for the souls of their enemies, they pray that God wipes them out of the way as soon as possible.
God doesn’t answer prayers of hatred. God answers prayers that come through His love.
If you are not serving love, you are not being a blessing. The Lord spreads a table for you in the presence of your enemies. He knows how to come against your enemies and still give them a chance to get right with Him. While they are eating briars, thorns and thistles, you are dining at the Lord’s banquet table.
Two Mules
This is a story of two mules. Mules are strange creatures. One was owned by a farmer who didn’t feed him very well. All too often all the poor mule had to eat was briars. Down the road lived another farmer who took good care of his mule, feeding him clover, alfalfa and oats. The well-fed mule was fat and frisky, the underfed mule so weak and scrawny he didn’t feel like moving. One morning the well-fed mule came dancing out of his stall. Enjoying mule-life to the fullest, he pranced over to the fence where the scrawny mule was standing all a-sag and sway-backed. Jealous of the approaching mule so full of energy and vitality, the scrawny mule slowly raised his head and muttered: “Fanaticism, fanaticism.”
The Christian world is a lot like the two mules. Some Christians limp along, follow a briar-fed social religion that excludes the full Gospel. Looking at Christians dining on the whole Word of God and covered with a blanket of love, all they can think of is fanaticism. What they call fanaticism we call the joy of the Lord, the love of Heaven, the good things of the Lord. We heard the Master’s invitation: Come and dine, and we came, dining with the one who serves love. Every cup the Lord serves is a cup of love that incorporates all Heaven, everything good and wonderful.
Victory over the Devil
Love that goes to Golgotha fights great battles for man. Love has all the right answers. The reason so many don’t find those right answers is that they don’t have God’s love or depend on it. They haven’t been taught about the Love that goes to Golgotha or to accept answers that come from that Love.
Be careful depending on human love. Human love is no stronger than the person. That one can suddenly die; love is gone, and you have nothing to fill the great void that death leaves. But the love of God will never die.
Jesus, that little bundle of God’s love who arrived in the manger, grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him (Luke 2:40). At twelve years of age, Jesus was in the temple with all the answers. They found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers (Luke 2:46,47). It wasn’t love that was twelve years of age; the wrapper that love came in was twelve. Love is as old as God Himself. As this container of God’s love grew into adulthood, we see Him entering the wilderness. Love took Jesus there forty days and nights to fast. Love stronger than an appetite for food sustained Jesus. Now closer than ever to Golgotha, this Love was going to fight the ultimate battle for us, meet the devil head-on with no compromise. He would put the devil to flight, winning for us victory over the devil. How did He win? Using the Word of God. Three times Jesus turned the devil back with, It is written, it is written, it is written. Love always uses the Word of God, God’s great and mighty sword is His Word.
Outstanding Love
The Old Testament prophets, those real prophets of God, were full of the love of God. What love they had! They would do anything for God, prophesy what He wanted even though it put their lives in danger. God’s love made them outstanding for His Kingdom. God’s love will make the Bride of Christ outstanding, too, in this her final hour.
The Bride with the love of God will be a fasting Bride. She will fast the biblical way, for the only proper fast is a biblical fast in God’s love. You fast the Bible way because you have God’s love; you know love is calling you to fast. Love has a call to prayer, to the Word of God and to fasting. When the Lord calls you, it’s a love call.
The Lord is calling you to learn of Him, calling you into His schoolroom. Here’s the teacher, the Holy Spirit, the Lord is saying. Linger with Him. He has all the answers, all you need. He is the Spirit of truth, and He will give you only truth. Jesus said, And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free (John 8:32).
Love sacrifices self, the kind of love that set Jesus on His way to Golgotha. Love is willing to face anything for the sake of the Lord.
Love that went to Golgotha didn’t consider His container: it didn’t really count. What was in the container mattered; in fact, it was valuable beyond words, the divine blood of our divine Savior. All the greatness of Heaven is in that divine blood.
Love that went to Golgotha gives sight to the blind, straightens twisted limbs and gives the crippled strength to walk. That love cries, Come unto me! Bring all your burdens to me! Turn them all over to Him with all confidence, knowing He will take care of them, and then don’t worry anymore about them.
God’s Love Is Sufficient
When my parents said they would take care of something, I didn’t worry about it anymore. I knew it would take place just as surely as if God had said it. That’s the confidence I placed in my parents, but security in God is greater than the security in the best of parents.
Although many people have never known the security that the love of a family offers, they will find that God’s love is more than sufficient, that the difficult past no longer matters when they find the reality of God’s overwhelming love. That’s the reason the Lord will not compromise with you about your past, saith the Lord.
Many people think their past excuses their shortcomings. I act like this because I was abused, and so people should overlook what I do. I just can’t help how I am. That isn’t what God says. He doesn’t overlook; He gives the blood to forgive and to change lives.
Why bring up all that has happened to you in the past if those memories block your receiving from the Lord? You are not living in yesterday; you are living in today with plenty of the Lord’s goodness to dine on.
You never had love? Then how much more you should reach out for God’s love! He holds it out to you. Satisfy yourself to the fullest extent with God’s love. Fill yourself every day with heavenly manna. Hunger and thirst for God’s love, let it be the focus of your attention. It doesn’t matter what people say about the past; let them talk. You are dining with the Lord and your soul is rejoicing—that dried up soul you once had! Now it’s alive, well, and shouting Hallelujah! God’s pouring in His love, and you delight as the Holy Ghost sends out that love to others.
When you leave the Lord’s table you should be so full of His love that your mind dwells on the good things the Lord served. He is all you want to talk about. Talk about Jesus, how He has blessed you. Pour God’s blessings out to others; tell what God is doing for you; tell about the Love that went to Golgotha.
Don’t hash over your past in your mind if it will hinder you. The only time you should look back on the past is to rejoice that your life now is in Christ, so very different from what it had been. Rejoice that you have love today that you didn’t have yesterday. Never go back to the past to use it as an excuse for your failure today. The past can be a glass alibi for not serving God today; drop it and it will break because it’s flimsy. God’s love is not in it. The only way you can hold on to the things of God is through love. Enjoy the love of the Lord. Step into your place in Him and give forth nothing but love.
Jesus Brought His Love for Us to Use
The Lord Jesus brought this great love, this wonderful divine blood-love that makes people new creatures. If you don’t use His great love it’s because you refuse to use it. You can sit and think about what happened to you in your past, sorrowing that it has robbed you of what God wanted you to have. But Love went to Golgotha for you. You don’t think you can accept love like that? If you haven’t had anything to eat for a week, would you accept a delicious meal someone brought you? Would you rather talk about how hungry you were, how terrible life has been for you? No, you would accept with gratitude the needed nourishment. Dine with gratitude at the Lord’s table loaded with spiritual food. You are the one who must partake; the Lord won’t partake for you.
If you didn’t have enough clothes to keep you warm, and you were invited to come into a wonderful store and help yourself to anything you wanted, would you accept or would you stay outside shivering and complaining about how hard you have had it? Would you take up all your time with poor-me stories and not go in to pick out one piece of clothing? What would you think about such a person? Would you think that one was stupid? He certainly would have all the earmarks of stupidity.
Pouting will make you and those around you miserable. Have you ever seen a happy pouter? But that blanket of love is a wonderful sight in the eyes of God. The love that goes to Golgotha is the kind of love that brings peace, joy and gladness. Divine blood-love went to Golgotha. Divine blood paid the price to make us new creatures.
God’s Power Transforms
Members of the Bride of Christ are the happiest people on Earth, the most powerful, the most learned in God’s wisdom and knowledge. The Bride will be the people who walk hand in hand with the nail-riven hand that went to Golgotha, those hands that made the supreme sacrifice. The Bride will walk in the shadow of His greatness, in the might of His power. She will serve only Jesus night and day.
When you ask for Jesus, you ask for the love of Heaven. When you ask for Jesus, you ask for the greatness of Heaven, for God’s best. His power transforms. Working within you, His power will make you like the first Adam and the first Eve before the fall. God will walk with you and enjoy you every bit as much as He once enjoyed them. How wonderful it was in Eden with an Adam and Eve who knew only love! They didn’t fuss or disagree. They had no misgivings or discontentments. Looking at each other, they found no fault. As one they blended together—until the day sin entered.
A Message from the Holy Ghost
Yea, saith the Spirit of the Lord: I am giving you my love. I am describing my love in every way I can through my servant. I am spending time with him, giving him understanding like never before of my love so he can teach you. I am reaching out to you with all of my love to bring you into all of my greatness. Yield to my love; don’t yield to the spirit of self, and don’t yield to the spirit of the enemy. Yield to my love, and say not that you can’t yield to my love. Anyone who can yield to hate, anyone who can yield to envy and strife can yield to my love. [If] you yield to the wrong spirit, you can yield to the right Spirit. If you can yield to that which the devil has, you can yield to that which I have. If you can yield to the bad, you can yield to the good. Yield to my love. Yield to the greatness of my love for you, and walk in the light of my love and it will make plain paths for your feet, saith the Lord. I love you, I love you, saith the Lord, with unending love.
God’s Love Conquers All
You who want to be loved by God, you who want the Lord to enclose you in His arms of love: Reach out to Him daily. He has given you enough reach that you can have all His love. If you want it, you can reach it. When problems arise, just reach for His love and let love conquer. His love conquers all.
Talk to the Lord. Tell Him: Lord, I’m reaching. I’m reaching for more of your love. I want to be as strong and happy as you can make me. I want you to use me in every way you want to use me. Give me your love today, all the meas-ures I need now. I know you’re with me, Lord. I feel your love. I don’t doubt that you are here reaching to me. I know you are reaching to others and I know you haven’t left me out. Your Word says you love me with an unending love. You will never cease to love me.
I will be secure in your love. I will live in full assurance of your love. I will use the grace of Heaven in your love, and that grace is sufficient. I’m yielding to you now. Help me not to yield to any clamor, any confusion, any contention, any disagreement. Help me not to yield to any unkindness or unforgiveness. Help me, Lord, to yield to you, only to you. I am yours.
Jesus, you made the love trip to Golgotha; you went there for me. Your great love is the love that is mine. There are no disappointments in your love, no weaknesses. Everything I need is in your love. I want your love blanket to keep me warm in this cold, cold world. I want your blanket of love to be so big that I can cover others with it, that I can share your great love with others, with sinners who will feel the need of your love, too.
Anoint me now. I open my soul to you. Pour in your love! Help me to be yielded daily to the Holy Spirit that lives and dwells on the inside of me so that He will pour out your love in my spirit and mind.
I consecrate everything to you. I renew my covenant of love with you, Jesus. I’m going to walk in your love in a special way. Come, Holy Spirit. Use me. Use me to serve God’s great love to the lost, to those I come in contact with, to those far away. Through your great love I can send your love to them.
I love you, Jesus, and I thank you for going to Golgotha. I’m in love with you, Jesus, and I want you to be in love with me every moment that I have left.
Bask in God’s Love
Bask in God’s love. How do you bask in the love of the Lord? By lifting your mind into His great love. Your meditation is upon His love, not anything less. You are pondering His love. Be conscious of the journey His love made all the way from Heaven to Earth, all the way from the manger to Golgotha. Think of the long journey to Golgotha. It took quite a few years and much sacrificing for Love to make that journey. The one who left Heaven suffered much being away from the Father. He was on a love journey for us. How can we do less than give our best to Him? Never forget to tell the Lord how much you love Him. What a price He paid, what a journey!
What does it matter about your feelings? What does it matter about little things that can cause offense? Those little things are just gnats that the devil is using to try to get your mind away from the Lord, to hinder you so you won’t use the love of God.
People are dying all around us without love. Thousands will go into eternity this very day without hope and without God. Only Love can save them. If Love can’t rescue them, they won’t be rescued.
It’s a gigantic rescue that Heaven is seeking to make. Don’t let it be said that you hindered the rescue effort in any way. Any time you don’t yield to Love, you hinder Love.
Remind yourself daily, as many times as it will bring strength or help you: The Lord loves me. When you say that, feel His love. He gave you feelings on purpose, but first He wants you to have faith that He is God, faith that He is the great I-Am, faith in all that He has promised. You find it all in His love.
As you get rid of every hurt, every thought that would bring a shadow over His love, everything that would block His love in any way, you can run triumphantly in His greatness in this last hour. You can do His good will and please Him well. You can do it all through the Love that went to Golgotha for you and me.
