It’s Time to Agree with the Holy Spirit
by Ernest Angley
April 1993
Agree with the Holy Spirit, it’s a must. The first step in agreeing with the Holy Spirit is receiving salvation, a born–again experience. The Lord loves you. If you confess to Him your sins—realizing that you are lost, that only Jesus can help—and invite Him into your heart, He will come in to set up His abode. If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved (Romans 10:9). Not until you receive salvation are you eligible for the baptism in the Holy Spirit, the experience those in the Upper Room received on the Day of Pentecost when they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance (Acts 2:4).
Tongues, the Initial Evidence of the Holy Ghost Baptism
God wants you to know that the Holy Spirit talks; it’s the first thing He does when He baptizes a person, the initial evidence of the Holy Ghost baptism. You have not been baptized in the Holy Spirit until He speaks. When the Holy Ghost comes in to set up His abode within a life today, He does just what He did on the day of Pentecost: with other tongues He speaks through the person being baptized.
Right before Jesus ascended to Heaven, He told the disciples that believers would speak with new tongues (Mark 16:17). The new tongues is not the converted tongue of salvation; it is the Holy Ghost tongue, the tongue of the Spirit.
Speaking in another tongue signifies that the Holy Spirit has the whole you, for no one can take you over one hundred percent who can’t control your tongue. But when you agree to yield completely to the Holy Spirit so that He can direct you at all times, He will make your paths plain, shine the light of God on your way, give you direction.
God has a reason why He chose to give the baptism in the Holy Spirit, why He chose tongues as the initial evidence. God is a reasonable God. Everything He does is sensible, reasonable. Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD (Isaiah 1:18). You will not yield to that call of reason unless you yield to the Holy Ghost.
Paul met some disciples at Ephesus who were believers but had not received the baptism in the Holy Ghost. In fact they said, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues and prophesied (Acts 19:2–6).
Jesus Will Come Again
The disciples were filled with great joy as they watched Jesus ascend back to Heaven, knowing He had conquered death, hell and the grave. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven (Acts 1:10,11).
Jesus Promised to Send the Comforter
They had found the Savior, the Messiah, and nothing else mattered—but the joy they felt wasn’t the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Earlier, Jesus had told the disciples about the Holy Spirit: When the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me (John 15:26). After the disciples were baptized in the Holy Ghost, they went everywhere with the message of Jesus, testifying through the power of the Holy Ghost.
If the Holy Ghost is in your life you are blessed, richer than a billionaire. You have a guide who knows every path that leads to Heaven. He has answers for each question, knowledge of all you need, the know–how for everything. Study how to yield to Him, how to agree with Him. Decide that from this time forward you will not go against the Holy Spirit in any way.
Agreement Comes with Harmony in the Lord
In order to walk with the Holy Spirit, to live together, be together, you must agree with Him. The Bible asks us in Amos 3:3, Can two walk together, except they be agreed? If people disagree, there is no togetherness. You can’t walk with the Holy Spirit unless you agree completely with the pure Word of God, free from outside opinions or dressed up the way you want it to be. Take the Word as it is.
Few people with the baptism in the Holy Ghost have great Bible knowledge about it. Some have sought the baptism, received it, but then grieved the Holy Spirit out of their hearts and lives. They didn’t work with the Spirit; they didn’t agree with Him.
The Holy Spirit is the third person in the Trinity of the Godhead. He wants to live, dine, walk, sleep and be with you, to never go away from you. But how can two live together in the harmony of God’s Word, God’s truth if they don’t agree? Living in harmony with the Lord is the only way agreement can come.
When God saves you, He makes a covenant of salvation, an agreement that is fully explained in His Word. In giving you the Holy Ghost baptism, the Holy Ghost makes an agreement to be your comforter, your teacher, guide, leading you into all truth, to live within you. You cannot walk with the Holy Ghost—who is the Spirit of truth—in this hour unless you agree with all that God has said, all He stands for.
A Loathsome Third Party
In marriage, lack of agreement snuffs out much happiness. God’s truth will take care of problems that may arise in a marriage that agrees with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Problems in marriage are not meant to be solved with fussing and fighting but with love and respect for each other. When a couple have been baptized in the Holy Spirit and are yielding to Him, He is with them, drawing the two into His truth. If a couple face the truth together, they will live in harmony; but if not, discord will be a loathsome third party.
Face God’s truth. With His truth, agree for every problem to be solved. There must be harmony with the Holy Spirit, agreement with Him. Agreeing with the Holy Spirit is yielding to Him.
Are you really agreeing with the Holy Spirit or do you prefer your own opinions? How opinionated are you? I have seen stubborn opinions hinder many, but I don’t always tell the people. I leave them in the hands of God and pray for them. Through the eyes of God, through the Holy Spirit, I see the things they are doing, how they are displeasing Him, the arrogance of self, the deceit of self, holding up self when self should be put down. It hinders the working of the Holy Spirit.
The Unity of the Faith
Come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ (Ephesians 4:13). Coming into the stature of Jesus Christ, to live, walk and be like Him in the unity of the faith is possible when you agree with the Holy Spirit. Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3). In this last hour we all must come into the unity of the faith through the Holy Spirit. The Bride of Christ will walk in that unity in this last hour.
A Separating Time
We live in a separating time. The Bride is being separated from the lukewarm Christians; sinners are being separated from the world and receiving salvation, sinners no more. With the force of Heaven, the Lord is drawing on you. If you will agree with the Spirit, He will lead you into all the truths of God; but you must agree with the Spirit Himself.
The Holy Spirit stays with the truth. He is the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you (John 14:17). The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, uses the truth, speaks the truth, thinks the truth. He solves all problems through the truth. Everything operated by Him is through the truth.
There are those who try to explain away that which they don’t want to apply to their lives. But what God said He means. No one can get into Heaven without going through the truth of God the Bible way. There is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:12).
The Truth had walked the streets of Jerusalem, the hills of Galilee, performing wonderful miracles and works, but all families did not accept the truth. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me (John 14:6). Those who accepted the truth were separated, drawn into the truth.
Agreement without Compromise
You must agree with the Holy Spirit. To agree means to approve or give consent, to be like. You may agree with people when you shouldn’t. Compromise at times can be a form of agreement. Some bow down to untruth in order to avoid trouble.
We read about the great servants of God in Bible days, examples for us. When agreement meant compromising with the truth, they did not agree with anyone—authorities or kings. In agreement with God, those great men and women of the Bible could not be moved.
Three Hebrew boys were thrust into the fiery furnace because they agreed completely and only with Almighty God. No compromise with the truth was found in them; and God protected them, honored their loyalty.
The king gave them the choice of worshiping a golden image he had set up or of being cast into a fiery furnace. Their response was firm: O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up (Daniel 3:16–18).
The three Hebrew boys had no egotism for the king to manipulate; even his offer to have music played especially for them didn’t work.
The devil likes to work on the ego whenever he has an opportunity. Many Christians are cursed with egotism. I see it in God’s people. Egotism is a hindrance to the Holy Spirit; it never agrees with the truth; the truth is against it.
There is no need to puff up, thinking you are special. The only way you can be special is through God’s love, through God’s faith. For you to be special, God, not self, must make you that way. Being special to God is the only kind of special that counts. Without Christ we are nothing.
Daniel Agreed with God
Daniel had seen his nation as a whole fail God, choose not to agree with Him. Because of Israel’s disobedience, that nation was taken captive, exiled to Babylon. They knew the agreement, but as a whole they wouldn’t abide by it. Those who remained faithful to God were taken with the rest.
Daniel, even in Babylonian captivity, agreed with God. He continued to give thanks to God three times a day despite a decree that all petitions were to be directed instead to King Darius for thirty days. Threat of being thrown into the den of lions didn’t make Daniel compromise with the truth. He was separated unto God; he had the promise of eternal life, and he agreed with what God had said. Daniel lived with God; and God covered him with His miracle hand, delivering him safely out of the lions’ den. Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever. My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt (Daniel 6:21,22).
The Word Tells You How to Agree with God
God didn’t give you all of Himself in the Bible, but He gave enough to supply whatever you need. The Bible stipulates everything necessary to form an agreement with God, all the ways to yield to Him. For instance, the Bible tells you how to love the Lord: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind (Luke 10:27). Love the Lord with the whole you. This is your part of the agreement.
The Lord agrees that Jesus will be with you as long as you walk in the Spirit of truth. But detouring from the truth cancels out that promise.
The Lord will not walk in the flesh; He walks in the Spirit. If you live in the flesh, walk in the flesh, He won’t be with you.
There are people who depend on an experience with God they had many years ago for their spiritual well–being. Even though they since have fallen away from God, they feel that experience will take them through to Heaven. They are deceived. Where are they now?—in a wilderness of lost paths because they refused to let God lead them out.
It’s time to yield one hundred percent to the Holy Ghost. With Him, you have the third person in the Trinity of the Godhead. Become acquainted with Him; discover what He will do and what He won’t do. Learn how He will help you pray, how He will bless and edify you, how He will feed the Word to you and work through you. Study how to yield to Him, how to agree with Him.
God has given us the mind of Jesus so we can think the way He wants us to think. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:5). How exciting to know that we can have the thoughts of God, the mind of God!
We are to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked (I John 2:6). Jesus made His steps small enough for us to walk in. The directions for that walk can all be found in the Word of God.
A Divine Visitation
In the divine visitation I experienced with the Lord in 1954, I walked with Him in a vision of the last great hour of the pouring out of the Spirit. Even though He was so tall that I never saw His face, I had no problem keeping up with Him. As He spoke, He was showing me His miracles, commanding them to be done; and they were done. All kinds of miraculous things took place through His Word as He spoke. The greatness of God was in action. He let me have a vision of things to come, and I didn’t doubt any of it.
We all have the opportunity to walk with the Lord—not in vision, but in daily, living reality. He has promised to walk with His obedient children.
Security in the Lord
God’s miracle greatness will bring faith to you. You will be right with Him, so nigh unto Him, so yielded to the Spirit of truth that you won’t struggle with doubt all the time. You won’t have to fight through frustration, fear, oppression and depression, for you will feel secure, saith the Lord. You will have that security that you need.
The Early Church had security in the Lord. That’s the reason so many of them paid the ultimate price to carry the Gospel of the Lord, giving everything—even their lives. Many were separated from family, friends, loved ones because it was the only way they could be separated into the truth.
A Point of Contact
Whatever will release your faith in God He will use. I never, never would have instructed people in other countries to put a blest cloth in a glass of water and drink the water to get well, but that is what they are doing—and they are being healed. The water doesn’t heal them; it is simply a point of contact to release their faith in God’s miracles. I didn’t tell them to do it that way, I say again; but if it helps them release their faith, I praise God for it. Healing revivals are taking place through the blest cloths. Lepers are cleansed, the blind receive sight, cripples are made to walk, the paralyzed delivered.
It wasn’t the water that healed Naaman when he dipped in the River Jordan seven times; it was the power of God. Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean. And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel (II Kings 5:14,15). Dipping in the water helped Naaman die out to self and release his faith. Naaman had wanted to give up when he first heard his instructions—dip in Jordan seven times; but he humbled down, obeyed what was given him by the man of God, and the Lord healed him.
We read how a point of contact brought miraculous results in New Testament days: And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women. Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one (Acts 5:14–16). The shadow of Peter didn’t heal the people; but as people released their faith, God was able to heal them. Taken over by the Spirit of truth, the Early Church rejoiced in His incredible works.
Hear What the Spirit Is Saying
It isn’t always easy to obey God because there is self to contend with. Self is your enemy number one; the number one defense against self is the truth that shoots self down. Decide self will no longer control you; determine in your heart to be controlled by the Holy Spirit, to not say or do anything contrary to the Spirit, to not take one step outside the truth. When the Lord calls for a fast—or anything else—self must yield. Obey the voice of the Lord.
The first three chapters of Revelation cover the entire Church Age. In those three chapters you will find the same admonition seven different times: He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. With spiritual ears, pick out the voice of Heaven; listen to what the Spirit is saying to you.
Check Manifestations with the Word of God
Yield to the Holy Spirit by agreeing with Him. He will never give you a vision or say anything contrary to the true Bible. If God tells you anything or gives you a vision, He will direct you to take it to the Word of God; and He will even show you where to look. Take everything to the Word of God. God forbid that we go against the Spirit in any way.
All that I do in this healing ministry has been taken to God, checked, given the Word test. If there are new manifestations in my service or manifestations through a person in the congregation that I don’t quite understand, all I have to do is take them to God and He explains them. He promised He would in the beginning when He gave me the gift of discerning of spirits.
I am sensitive to spirits; I have to be. I don’t accept every spirit that manifests itself through people. Jesus didn’t. On one occasion the disciples wanted to call fire down from heaven on those in a Samaritan village who refused to receive Him, but Jesus turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them (Luke 9:55,56).
The Lord doesn’t always take care of wrongs immediately. I don’t handle wrongs unless God moves on me to do so. When He moves on me, I act; until then, I stand on the sidelines and pray about it. If a person isn’t ready to agree with the Holy Spirit, there is not much I can do but pray. God can’t lead those who won’t agree with the truth. He could kill them, but that wouldn’t make them agree.
God doesn’t want to send anyone to hell. He gave His Only Begotten Son to save the lost. He does everything He can—Calvary proved it—to save you. Know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Lord wants you to be in Heaven with Him.
Death Seemed More Real to Me Than God’s Healing
Are Calvary, Heaven, the Rapture all like a dream to you? Does divine healing seem real? God wants to make all His promises real to you through the power of the Holy Spirit; but if they seem too good to be true, you don’t agree.
In my twenties when I became very ill, for a time the fact that God would heal me didn’t seem real. My body had wasted away to almost a skeleton, and I had only a few more days to live—so I thought. I tried to reach out for healing, but there seemed to be no reality to it. Death had become my reality. I didn’t want to die; I wanted to live and preach the Gospel for my Lord, but I had suffered so long that I yielded to the suffering instead of to the healing of Jesus. Getting worse instead of better, I stopped agreeing with the Holy Spirit that God was going to heal me; I agreed with the pain, agreed with death.
At one time during my illness, the Lord had told me through prophecy of the Holy Spirit that He would heal me. I was conducting a revival service, so ill I had to hold to the pulpit to keep standing. And then the prophecy came. That night I had the reality of my healing, and the pain left. I had been suffering deaths, but after the prophecy I finished my sermon and felt good going home. But as the months passed by, that promise faded from my thoughts. Losing sight of the promise of healing when pain returned, I let pain take the place of the promise. I have never been able to adequately describe the pain; it was like a hot iron stuck to my body; I would feel as though I couldn’t live another moment.
Doubting that God will heal you is a fearful state to be in. But death wasn’t what God had said. God said He would heal me. Because I forgot His promise, I had to suffer much.
Agreement with the Lord Defeated Death
Then one night the Lord came, covered me with His power in such a way that it was easy for me to agree with Him. He was there to talk with me, to make a perfect agreement that night. He said that later I would go on a long fast and when I came out of that fast I would have His power for the healing of the people. His agreement with me was not only for healing but that I was to have His gifts to carry His power to the people, to the nations throughout the earth. The boy who was in no shape to accept such an agreement a short time previously, now accepted it all. I was in the very presence of the Lord, and He was covering me with His power.
Many are overpowered by God’s Spirit as it comes on them just like it came on me that night. Some agree for their healing. Others may agree for the moment, but another pain will convince them they are not healed. Some of you will receive a miracle and then when false symptoms of the disease come in, you doubt your miracle. The devil gives you pain and gloats: See, you aren’t healed!
The devil tried to work that way on me because he had been able to stop me from holding onto my miracle months earlier. But now my agreement with the Lord defeated him in spite of the fact that after I was healed I had pain.
I didn’t tell even my wife, Angel, of the pain. I made it my business to tell everyone I could that I was healed. Claiming the promises of God without doubting backs the devil away. I accepted God’s agreement. In accepting that agreement, I knew I had to get well. I told my wife, “It’s all done.” Nevertheless, I could meet someone, tell about my miracle and then start hurting almost every time. The devil would whisper, You’re the biggest liar. You know you couldn’t be healed and still have pain. You know if God does anything, He does it just right. God pays no attention to what the devil says; why should we?
I loved to meet a skeptic, look him straight in the eye and say, I got a miracle! What could he do with me? He may have wished that I would go away, but he was in the same position as the skeptics in Bible days when the Lord healed a man through Peter and John: And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it (Acts 4:14). The man God healed through Peter and John had never walked before—and he was over forty years old. People knew him. The miracle he received couldn’t be denied.
After I had received my miracle, the devil one day gave a final big rush. On the floor of my home, doubled up in pain, I launched out in the deep, telling God if I died, He would be embarrassed. I had told everyone I was healed—and I meant it. That was what God wanted.
Claim the Miracle from Your Heart
Claiming a miracle can’t be by mental assent alone; it must be claimed from the innermost being. Mean it and stick with it. I had an armful of promises, and the devil would have to sink every one of them in order to sink me. I was determined not to turn loose of one promise, regardless of how much pain I had. The Lord had promised me life, and I was going to have it. If I died, I would die saying, I’m healed, I’m healed, I’m healed! I was healed, and I am still healed today.
Resist the Devil
Revelation 12:10 identifies the devil as the accuser of our brethren. But one day he will be cast down and no longer able to accuse the children of God before the Father. Jesus called him a murderer&…;a liar, and the father of it (John 8:44). He is a robber and a thief to be trampled underfoot by the power of God.
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you (James 4:7,8). Resist the devil with the Word of God, the promises of God. Accept the agreement, the covenant of healing, of salvation, of deliverance, of Heaven being yours, of eternal life. These things are an agreement for you to make with the Lord God.
When people or the devil tell you that you can’t make it, agree with the Spirit and you can. Paul did. He said, I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me (Philippians 4:13). The devil tells you that your needs aren’t going to be supplied, but the Holy Spirit is saying, My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). Agree with that promise.
When the devil whispers that the Lord is not hearing your cries, the Holy Spirit counters with, The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles (Psalm 34:17). Agree with the Spirit. You are righteous or you wouldn’t be saved and have the Holy Ghost dwelling within.
With His Stripes We Are Healed
God’s agreement is real. He seeks to make healing real to you—He did to me. He will make real to you whatever you need if you accept His promises without doubting. All His promises will be real to the Bride of Christ in this last hour.
If you will agree with the Holy Spirit, He will destroy that which God doesn’t want to be a part of you, that which would separate you from your God, so you can walk hand in hand with Him.
It doesn’t matter what the doctors have said about your case when you agree with God for your healing. Doctors may have no control over your case, but God has. The Bible declares, Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to–day, and for ever (Hebrews 13:8). This means He will heal today and in the future because He healed yesterday. Healing is promised to all in the Word of God, but it’s a promise that requires agreement on your part. It is God’s will for all to have good health. Sickness and disease come from the devil, not God. Jesus provided healing for you in the atonement: With his stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53:5).
Expect God to Heal You
Man was created in God’s health, and man kept that health as long as he stayed in God’s presence. Come into His presence, and the promises are yours. Jesus brought healing to an unhealed people just as He brought salvation to a godless people. He is stretching forth His healing power to you. You can be made well not of only one thing, but you can be made well all over. Through the strength and power of Jesus, through His goodness, through His mercy and love it will happen.
Do not hinder the Lord with a lack of agreement about what He will do. Do not come to Him with unbelief, but come expecting Him to heal you. Come to Him in faith, for if you rely on your feelings, you may think you are not ready to receive from Him. Expect His greatness because He is the Lord thy God; He has all power and He is stretching forth with healing to make you whole. As He stretches forth with His greatness, it will be within your reach; you will be able to touch your Lord. And as you reach to touch your Lord, your Lord will touch you and deliverance will be yours.
Trust the Lord with All Your Heart
Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. Agree with Him and it will be done. He is the healing Christ, the Redeemer. He is the Christ from Heaven who brought deliverance to Earth. He is the one who will deliver you and set you free. Do not doubt. Agree with the healing He seeks to bring you. He gave His blood for you; He gave His body for you so you can be delivered. Look unto Him, trust Him, believe Him; and He will do His wonderful work.
Do you need a miracle? You can have it by launching out in faith agreeing with the Word of the Lord. If God has given you that wonderful healing power of the miraculous, sent it into your body and yet you have symptoms of your affliction, let the Lord take away those, too. Lord, I bring them to you. I bring all that are seeking healing. I bring those the devil is trying to rob of healing or salvation. In the name of Jesus, in the holy name of Jesus, deliver! In the name of Jesus, heal the sick and afflicted today. Heal! Heal, in the holy name of Jesus.
Don’t be afraid of losing your miracle. Rather than entertaining false symptoms, agree with the promises of God. Let those promises rush into your heart. Let His power work. Use the faith of God as you agree with His promise: With His stripes I am healed. You must agree with the Holy Spirit.
