How to Wait Upon the Lord
by Ernest Angley
April 2004
Have you forgotten to wait upon the Lord? The Bible tells us in Isaiah, But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint (Isaiah 40:31). Do you talk weakness, afraid of losing your strength? Isaiah didn’t say anything about being limited by age; he said they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. The Lord will renew strength. They shall mount up with wings as eagles. The Lord furnishes wonderful wings for His children to rise and soar above where the eagles go; eagles dare not fly so high as the places God has provided for His children.
They shall run, and not be weary. Sometimes you think you can hardly walk, but the Lord said to wait upon Him and you would run and not tire.
They shall walk, and not faint. This is a faith walk, one in which you don’t faint, but reap in due season. Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not (Galatians 6:9). You’ll reap the fullness of each promise that you claim if you don’t faint. The Bible doesn’t say you will reap if you don’t die first; it says you will reap if you don’t faint. You can’t afford to faint; you lose too much, spiritually speaking. Exchange that fainting spirit for a strong one.
In all the history of the Lord, I’ve never heard of His fainting. He isn’t dead; He’s alive. When the Son of God gave Himself over to death, He conquered it for us, showed us that it could be done. Now we need not fear death at all; Jesus, in fact, called it sleep; He had power over death when man dared to believe.
Jairus was told that his daughter was dead, but Jesus said, Be not afraid, only believe. And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying. And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise. And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment (Mark 5:36,38-42).
It’s easy to use faith. Why make it hard by allowing the human spirit and the enemy to work against you? Faith is given in a simple form. The very educated, the very uneducated, the very poor, the very rich and all in between can use it if they will. It’s whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely (Revelation 22:17). Whosoever will, let him come and use the faith of God. Faith is a gift of God; to everyone is given a measure of faith. God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith (Romans 12:3). The Lord gives you faith and He expects you to use it.
Feelings Are Not Faith
Preacher, I don’t have any faith.
How do you know?
Well, I don’t feel like it.
Feelings have nothing to do with faith. Faith and feelings are not even fiftieth cousins; in other words, they have no relationship at all. Why should you try to connect them, bring them together? Your feelings and God’s faith…isn’t it ridiculous to try to combine them?
When you don’t feel like reading the Word of God, that’s the very time you should read it. You don’t feel like praying today? You need to go into the prayer closet and say, Here I am, Lord; I’m in your hands and we’re going to have a good, long talk because you said you’d be with me all the time and you’d meet with me in my prayer chamber. I’m coming your way, Lord; I need to talk to you. It’s wonderful to be able to talk to the Lord while you’re waiting!
Some of you think of waiting on the Lord as shutting yourself away in a desolate place of life where everything is gloomy, dark. The idea of waiting makes you so depressed that you don’t even want to open the blinds to let in the sunshine. You feel the sun is shining on everyone else but you: God loves everyone else better than He loves me. You poor little pitiful creature! Take a lesson from the birds. Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows (Matthew 10:29-31). The birds aren’t worrying about whether or not the Lord loves them; they sing their hearts out about the greatness of the Lord. In the sunshine or in the rain, the birds sing the songs the Lord gave them.
You don’t have to pet the flowers to get them to grow. It isn’t necessary to tell them they’re the most beautiful flowers you’ve ever seen in your life, that there’s never been a flower like them, never been such a beautiful color. No, they grow just the same. But if some Christians aren’t sufficiently praised, they just wilt. Don’t look for compliments from people; please God and wait upon the Lord.
The Devil Is Not Your Authority
Preacher, I tried waiting upon the Lord.
Then the devil has cheated you, making you think that God isn’t going to answer, isn’t going to pay attention to you. The devil whispered in your ear that you were not in the right place. But whoever said you were to listen to the devil, take orders from him? Whoever said the devil had any right to give you orders? God certainly doesn’t think it’s all right for you to obey the devil. Jesus said that you couldn’t have two masters: No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon (Matthew 6:24).
The devil is not your authority; God is. Wait in God’s waiting room; wait in His love, not in people’s love. If some of you don’t have all the love from others that you feel you should have, if everyone you want to love you doesn’t show you that love and kindness, you become depressed. You don’t feel as though you’re in God’s waiting room, don’t feel the Lord is going to lift you up. Why? Because people aren’t showing you all the love you want them to show you. Human love has nothing to do with how much the Lord loves you. The Lord didn’t say one thing about another human being helping you to fly, not at all.
What Are You: A Sparrow or an Eagle Christian?
If you’re going to fly like the eagle, it won’t be in the power of people who lift you up; it will be in the power of the Lord. You won’t soar that way in an airplane or in anything else that man has made. Man has nothing to do with your flight any more than man has anything to do with the way the eagle soars. Mount up like the eagle, not like the sparrow.
Are you a sparrow or an eagle Christian? What are you? That little sparrow suffers through all the storms; oh, how he dreads them! They beat hard against him. There he is trembling, scared out of his song. But where is the eagle? When you look around for the eagle, don’t look down low; he’s soaring high above the storm. Don’t look down either for children of God when they’re in the Spirit. That eagle Christian, that wonderful person in the Lord, is riding out the storms like the eagle. And like the eagle, he or she loves a good storm.
Preacher, I don’t love storms, not spiritual ones.
You may not love them, but you don’t have to let them get you down. You will have spiritual storms, and the Lord has given you the greatness of Him to ride them out, eagle power to soar above the storms. How does the eagle do it? He spreads his wings and rides on what the little sparrow is about to die of fear from.
God has given you wings of love—His—to ride out the storm, sail right above it. Like the eagle, you can say, Here comes a good one! The more ferocious the storm, the higher the eagle sails.
When are you going to learn, Child of God, that you’re to stay above the storm? God’s love will keep you above the storm just like it kept Peter—when he yielded to it. When the disciples saw him [Jesus] walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come (Matthew 14:26-29).
Peter was going to fly. He stepped out of the boat like an eagle, but he ended up sinking like a sparrow. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt (Matthew 14:29-31)?
God Gives His Children Power
The Lord has given you all the strength of His wings, all the grace, the favor of Him that you need. As God gave the eagle favor to fly higher than most birds, God has given His children power to soar higher in life than anyone else, to go beyond, to have more joy, more peace, more help, to have abundant life. But if they don’t use what the Lord has given them, they’re going to live like the little sparrow with the storms turning them into nervous wrecks.
Preacher, the Christian life is hard.
You’ve made it hard. The Lord told you to rejoice, to not be depressed. Rejoice when tribulations come, when people despitefully use you. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven (Matthew 5:11,12). Jesus, our example, didn’t open His mouth when He was persecuted. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth (Isaiah 53:7).
Joy in the Valley
It’s time to learn how to wait upon the Lord, to wait in His love. When you wait in His love, that love begins to move, drawing you up, up, up, and joy begins to bubble. Joy in the valley…have you had joy in your valleys?
Preacher, what are you talking about? I’m doing well to breathe sometimes!
You can be an eagle Christian or you can be a sparrow Christian, I say again; you have a choice. Afraid you may drown, you can hide in the crevices of the rock. Some Christians are satisfied just to survive. Managing somehow to get by, they forget abundant living. That’s not what God intended. Wait upon the Lord; wait in His promises. But make sure you believe the promises of God, or you won’t be in God’s waiting room.
If you’re full of doubt, you’re not in God’s waiting room. God’s waiting room is filled with pure faith, joy-unspeakable, and it’s full of glory. God’s waiting room is filled with the grace of God, favor from On High, courage and full assurance. While you’re waiting upon the Lord, He is there to serve you through the Holy Spirit Himself. He spread a table in the wilderness for the Israelites, and He’s spreading a table for you when all looks like a wilderness; but with Him you’re in spiritual Canaan. The waiting room may look like a desolate land—the devil tries to make it seem that way, tries to keep you from seeing as the eagle sees—however, in the waiting room is pure victory. The eagle can see far, but the poor little sparrow’s vision is limited.
Do You Want God’s Will or Your Own?
What kind of eyesight do you have? Do you have Bible eyesight or merely physical eyesight? Physical eyesight can’t see around a corner three yards away. Why not let the Holy Spirit sharpen your eyesight?
You say you’re waiting upon the Lord? Are you waiting for Him to agree that you can have your own way? Are you waiting for Him to say what you want Him to say? What are you waiting for? Are you waiting for His answer or your answer? If you’re waiting for your answer, then you’re not in God’s waiting room. You’re waiting at the wrong place because He’s not going to meet you there.
The reason some people don’t get many prayers answered is that they want them answered their way, not God’s way. I have a standing order in Heaven that if I ever ask one tiny thing not in His divine will, I don’t want Him to grant it through His permissible will. Lord, do not answer any prayer I pray that’s not your divine will. I want a divine answer to every prayer, and then it will be in perfection, the perfection of God’s love and grace for me.
God’s waiting room is for people who want the will of the Lord. Those are the only kind who will mount up like the eagle with wings of faith, joy, peace, grace, love, hope, greatness, wings that soar above disasters, discouragements. Mount up with wings that sail above all the enemy brings against you. Then when you look down on the storm, it will seem insignificant. It’s the Lord’s wings that you’re using, wings that Jesus brought.
Man under the Law was in pitiful shape; study him. He didn’t have the wings of the Lord as we have them today. Jesus brought these great wings to us; God sent His love when He sent Jesus.
When you wait upon the Lord, you wait knowing that the Lord is going to meet you as you stay with His promises. You may go somewhere other than God’s waiting room to wait, but the promises will not all be fulfilled and the Lord will be limited in what He can do for you. If you want God to really move for you, go into that waiting room seeking the divine will of God; that’s the right ground to be on.
Why would you rebel? Why not get rid of all your opinions? Let them melt; do away with them. In the divine visitations of the Lord, my opinions don’t count at all; I don’t find them in operation. In the divine presence of the Lord, I’m listening, holding on to all He is saying; I don’t want to miss anything. If I don’t quite understand, I’ve learned He will go over what He’s telling me another time; He’s like that. He has great patience, and He teaches us to have patience. When you’ve done all, then you wait patiently to mount up. But before you stop over at God’s waiting room, do everything you know to do. You have an instruction book, the Bible, to show you the way. Do what you can do and when you have come to the end of yourself, let God take over.
Every time you go into the waiting room, make sure you’re to the end of yourself, that there is no selfish motive in what you are waiting for. Make sure you really want God to do things His way. Use the humility Jesus used when He was here. God doesn’t give us anything less than His humility.
Partakers of Divinity
Sons and daughters of God are served from Heaven just like God’s Only Begotten was served. We’ve been made joint heirs with Jesus, co-workers, not when we get to Heaven, but right now. Every child of God can be just like Jesus. Jesus was always in the right waiting room when He called up the Father. “Father, you always hear me,” He said. He was in the place where the Lord answers.
If you’re not getting answers to prayer, move out of that place and into a place directed by the Holy Spirit through the Word of the Living God. You’ll find yourself partaking of divinity. The Lord tells us that we are to be partakers of the divine Spirit, of divinity. Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust (II Peter 1:4).
If you do not have divinity in your soul, your soul does not have eternal life. Eternal divine blood must be in your soul, the same eternal divine blood that was in the veins of Jesus. You have human blood in your veins, but you have divine blood in your soul when you are born again. The divine blood will work in your soul just like it worked in Adam and Eve before they fell, just like it worked in Jesus.
When Adam and Eve were created, they had divine blood; that’s the reason they were never going to die, the flesh never grow old. Aging and death are part of the curse. When they had divine blood, they never were in the waiting room for God, for everything was supplied. There was no need to pray; all their needs were taken care of. God came down to walk with them, and they enjoyed the supply as they reached out for it. It wasn’t necessary to ask God for anything; He served them. That’s the way it will be in Heaven: We won’t be praying to God; everything will be served, and how wonderful it will be! But in the moment Adam and Eve sinned they lost that divine blood, which would have made it possible for them to live forever, and they died spiritually and later physically as the Lord had warned.
Depend On God’s Word
Cut off discouragement to your life, that spirit of fear and worry. Cut it all off and take what the Lord offers you. Go into His place of waiting and find deliverance in His holy Word; it’s there. Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4).
When you’re in God’s waiting room, you depend on the Word; but if you’re not depending on the Word, you’re just fooling yourself; you’re not in God’s waiting room.
Get into God’s waiting room and receive answers to prayers, find the way of the Lord. He will lift you up on wings of faith, grace, love, peace, joy, compassion and longsuffering, lift you up, up, up. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us…hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:4,6). How wonderful it is to sit in a heavenly place!
That heavenly place is mighty high, higher than the eagle can fly. The eagle has reached a wonderful earth-place the Lord has provided for him, and he makes the most of it. The eagle, I’m sure, is a joy to the Lord when he soars high above the storm, using the wisdom and the knowledge God gave him. If we would only use the wisdom and the knowledge that God has given to us, we would soar above the storms of life. The eagle knows all he has to do is spread his wings; that’s not much effort for him. If you have the wings of love, it’s not much effort to spread those wings, either.
Love God, Not the World
The Lord has given you much love; there’s no limit to what the soul can hold, no limit to the soul’s capacity. The soul can hold the love and peace of Heaven, all the Godhead because the soul came from God. The Holy Spirit flows the greatness of God into that limitless reservoir of the soul. However, your mind is like a little cup, the capacity is limited. It’s from the unlimited capacity of your soul that the Holy Spirit serves that mind cup, but you have to yield your cup, give over your mind. You can’t be in God’s waiting room waiting upon the Lord when your mind is filled with clutter.
If you’re going to be in the Lord’s waiting room, don’t listen to music that doesn’t edify Him. In God’s waiting room you act as much like the Lord as you know how.
The Word of God tells us what He likes. John said, Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world (I John 2:15). How do you expect the Lord to lift you up when He’s doing well to get you to stand to your feet? He wants to lift you up with wings like the eagle, but He has to keep trying to get you to stand and put on the whole armor of God. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore (Ephesians 6:13,14).
Check Yourself
In the waiting room, check yourself, not with your feelings, but with the Word of God. Find out if you’re about to mount up with wings like the eagle or if you’re going to stay there year after year and never mount up. How long has it been since you rose above depression and oppression, fear and frustration? When things are unpleasant, are not right, the eagle doesn’t sit around depressed; he flies away. That little sparrow may be defeated, but not the eagle; it can be cloudy down below but he’s up high where the sun is shining.
Oh, Child of God, do you believe God’s glory is shining for you? Do you believe the sunshine of Heaven is for you? If so, then why live below the clouds all the time? Wait upon the Lord in His love and His grace. Wait in full assurance that I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me (Philippians 4:13). I can! I can! I can! I can be lifted up out of this sickness, out of this bed of despair. I can be lifted out of these mind battles and be free. I see the high arm of God raised for me and I’m waiting upon the Lord, happy in doing it. When I tell people I’m waiting upon the Lord, I say it with joy. Why? Because I know that soon He’ll meet me in His waiting room; He won’t disappoint me; everything is going to be all right.
Adorn Yourself in Holiness and Righteousness
These have been a few hints of how to wait upon the Lord. It would take me days to tell you all about His waiting room, but these are hints, appetizers to get you to reach out for that waiting room.
Maybe you’ve never found God’s waiting room, never been able to soar like the eagle above troubles when you needed to. Find God’s waiting room; use it. When troubles come, don’t bury your head and shut your eyes from the storm; rise up in the power of the Lord, in the greatness of God. Adorn yourself in the holiness and righteousness He has sent you to use. In the purity of God, the greatness of His power, go right on up above the storm knowing you’re fine because the Lord is with you. Everything is going to be all right for me; I’m in the hands of the Lord.
When the storm strikes and you’re in the waiting room, you don’t have to worry. The moment will come that the Lord wants you to fly, and He will lift you right up with His wings. He furnishes those wings to you when you’re waiting upon Him.
Preacher, I’ve been waiting a long time for my miracle.
Then why don’t you get ready to mount up today? Be in the Lord’s waiting room, ready to do anything God wants you to do, ready to please Him in any way. Don’t let the devil make you think for one moment that God won’t move for you. Lay claim to what God has promised and don’t let go, don’t loosen your grip one little bit. He promised: I am the LORD that healeth thee (Exodus 15:26). Hold to that promise and the Lord will fulfill it. But you must hold on to what God has said.
God’s people are a tried people, their faith tested. The Lord allows it because He gives them faith and greatness that He knows the devil can’t do anything with as long as they hold on to it. The devil cannot win when you really hold on to God’s faith; victory will come. The wings of the Lord will be yours to use just like the wings the Lord gave the eagle, and those wings definitely work.
Salvation and Healing Prayers
If you need Jesus today, lift your hands and say the sinners’ prayer. Oh, God, I believe in Jesus Christ. I know He died for me and I will live for Him. I believe the blood of Jesus will cleanse me from every sin, that I will be made a new creature in Christ Jesus. I put all my faith, all my trust, in the blood of Jesus; and I believe, oh, I do believe the blood of Jesus washes away all of my sins. Come into my heart, Jesus! Come on in!
If you meant that prayer, now you can say, Hallelujah, He has come! Hallelujah, Jesus is mine! I will serve the Lord.
You who are sick and afflicted: You may have leprosy, AIDS, heart trouble, sugar diabetes, cancer or maybe you’re paralyzed; it makes no difference, you can be healed. Lord, I bring the sick and afflicted; I bring whole families to you. In the name of Jesus, lay a healing hand on the people today. Let them know that thou art Lord of all. Heal! in the powerful name of Jesus. Heal! in the blood name of Jesus.
The healing power is flowing. Feel His presence and His power now and decide you’re going to get well or your baby is going to get well. Yes, God is moving. Believe Him and watch yourself or loved ones in your family get well, then write and tell me about it. Tell me what happened to you today and I will rejoice with you.
God bless you and be with you as you learn to wait upon the Lord.
