Eternity
by Ernest Angley
December 1992
God set time to have an end—an angel will declare it. An angel sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer (Revelation 10:6). At the end of time, all will exist only in eternity. Have you given eternity much thought? You entered time on the way to eternity the moment you were born; after you die, you will be in eternity, in a very real place of either eternal day or eternal night.
Most people, so concerned with living in time, neglect to weigh eternity. It’s a place of existence they don’t consider, yet many have found its reality to be only a breath away.
Eternity is vast beyond all imagination and information, endless and inevitable. It can only be successfully faced one way—with Jesus Christ. He came to make it possible for all to enjoy eternal day. Having lived there since before the foundation of the earth, Jesus was very familiar with it. He wanted this marvelous existence to be real to all mankind. But He knew only the pure, clean and holy could live with Him there.
Endless Day or Endless Night: Your Choice
Eternity means existence without beginning, continuance without end. You can meet it with the devil, his angels and the wicked of all ages; or you can meet it in the light of God’s holiness, righteousness, salvation. Through the light of Calvary, the blood that stained the Old Rugged Cross, you can enjoy the God-life for all eternity; or by turning away from God, you can suffer the raging torments of hell.
Once you find yourself in the hereafter, you can’t back out if you change your mind. Were you to enter through the gate of night into the eternity of darkness, you would realize that Calvary, salvation are out of reach. That eternal night provides no precious shed blood to wash away sin, nothing to change you, to make you happy. You will be the same tortured person as the endless ages roll, carrying the same sins, the same wickedness, surrounded by hosts of evil, tormented souls. The sins you enjoyed so much on Earth, the ones that satisfied the lust of the flesh will be agony to you now. Desiring all that you longed for on Earth, you will have no way to fulfill those desires. None of them will be satisfied. You sold your soul to the devil in many different ways. Torture, torture, torture will wrack you eternally.
God won’t be in that eternity of darkness and night with you. He will seal it off never to think of it again after that final day. Wiping it out of His memory, He will wipe it out of the memories of His children, too, erase the memory of all loved ones who have gone into that terrible eternal night. They’ll never be remembered again.
Jesus Brought Life
Jesus came, bringing a way for you to avoid that eternity of hell. Many think they are too intelligent to accept the lowly cross on which Jesus died. They consider needing Him to be beneath them. It is true that with God’s great mercy they can live through time, but there is no way to get into the heavenly eternal day without Jesus.
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son (I John 5:11). God has given us eternal life, but it comes through His Son and His Son only. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me (John 14:6). Jesus is teaching that He is eternal life, not just time life. He is eternal life, eternal joy, eternal peace, grace, strength, health; and He gives an eternal body that will never tire or wear out, a glorified body. It’s all promised.
And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life (I John 5:20). We who have been born again don’t only know Him that is true; the Scripture declares that we are in Him; we live in Him and He lives in us. Eternal life with the Lord dwells on the inside of each true child of God. You cannot separate God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit from eternal life.
To seek eternal day is to seek Jesus Christ. He is the only one who can deliver it to you. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16). Knowing you will live forever with Jesus is a marvelous feeling.
Where is your trust? If your trust is in the Lord Jesus Christ, you have nothing to fear, nothing to worry about. You should be the happiest person on planet Earth, knowing that eternal life on the inside of you is gushing forth, springing toward that eternal day with the Lord.
Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed (John 6:27). Many labor for the meat of today, but Jesus tells us to labor for that meat which endures unto everlasting life in that eternal day with the Lord. Jesus is that greatness, that meat. I am that bread of life, He said (verse 48).
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life (verse 47). To believe on the Lord does not mean to give mental assent alone but to believe from the heart, the soul. Believe that Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary. Without that virgin birth, there would be no eternal life in Heaven for you, only eternal night with the devil and his angels. Believe in His shed blood, in all that He taught and brought.
Jesus said, I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture (John 10:9). Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber (verse 1). Heaven offers no side doors, no exceptions. Jesus is the only door. If you believe in Jesus Christ, you have the door; if not, there is no other way to enter Heaven. The door is so high you can’t go over it, so low you can’t squeeze under, and so wide you can’t go around. You must go in through the door.
We lack all the benefits of eternity here on Earth because part of us belongs to time. Our bodies belong to time, to the dust of the earth. They came from the earth and will go back there—unless they are changed in the Rapture. Only glorified bodies belong to God’s eternity of bliss. Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption (I Corinthians 15:50).
Jesus said in John 6:51, I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. Jesus came down from the glorious part of eternity to show man how to live in time so he will be prepared to live in eternal day with Him. If you partake of Jesus, if you accept Jesus, you will live forever with Him. Jesus has offered eternal life to the whole world, but many are wrapped up in the life of time without a thought of a future timeless world.
Time Talks
No matter how happy you are, no matter how much you would like to hold on to that moment of happiness, the clock is taking it away from you. You hate for the time to come when you have to leave someone you love, someone whom you haven’t seen for a long time. But that clock lets you know you must go. Time talks. It dictates when to catch a plane, when to work, when to meet any number of schedules and appointments. Time tells you it is running out. Time was created by God Himself; it has God’s voice of authority.
Many don’t hear God’s voice; they aren’t thinking of how soon time will be gone, that they won’t be here much longer. You have but a short stay here on Earth. The voice of God reminds you of that. He is saying, Child, be ready. Your Earth life will be over before you know it. My Son is the door into eternal life with me. Accept Him, and you will have no trouble stepping into that eternal day.
If you could multiply the most glorious day you have ever experienced a million times and more, it would be less wonderful than that endless day in Heaven. You wanted to hold onto that perfect day on Earth, but time robbed you. Eternity will never rob you. Everything in that one eternal day will be filled with all that you love and enjoy. The eternal day is on the right, but beware of the eternal night to the left.
Life on the Razor’s Edge
This short period of time we live on Earth is but a blink in the eye of eternity. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day (II Peter 3:8). God is accustomed to dealing with eternity. These Earth days of trials, persecutions, hardships and sacrificing don’t really count. Soon they will pass, and all your troubles will be over—if you enter eternal day with Jesus, eternal happiness, peace and joy.
We are people with the opportunity to live in eternal light, to never again know darkness or sorrow; and yet many gamble in this tiny period of time with their souls. To satisfy the lust of the flesh, to do their own thing, go their own way, refusing to walk the paths of God is what they choose. They plan to get right with God—some day—but that doesn’t mean they will. With the exception of those who go to Heaven by way of the Rapture, it is appointed unto everyone to die and after that the judgment. You are here with the appointment of death.
If you could open a sealed envelope holding your appointment time, your life might change. Would you like to know the number of days you have left on Earth? Very sorrowful cries would be heard from many when they find their appointment is up in only a few days, a few hours, a few minutes. Their lives dwindled to razor’s edge, they will soon face either eternal day or eternal night.
To fall asleep at night with one sin in your heart is a terrible gamble. You take a grave risk when you close your eyes with anything unlike God in your heart, with any bitterness or grudge against anyone or against your God—a frightening chance. You may open your eyes in eternal night.
One day death will come to all who don’t go to Heaven by the way of the Rapture. What will it mean? When the light of time goes out, will you have greater light than ever before? When happiness on Earth is gone, will you step into that joyful place called Heaven? How will it be for you? Where are you stepping?
The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way (Psalm 37:23). Only those steps ordered by the Lord will lead you into the eternal greatness of God. You cannot possibly get there any other way but through Jesus. How wonderful to rest in full assurance that you have your ticket to Heaven, to an eternity of bliss! Your joy there will last as the endless ages roll.
Jesus Christ is your way. Think of those who have placed all their hope, all their interests and ambitions on good times in Earth time, all their money. When they die, they will be paupers; they failed to serve God.
Those who count time so very precious, who reach for more and more of it and are never satisfied, function as though they would live in time forever. Everything within them is planned around Earth time. How foolish, when Earth time soon will be no more! Time is melting away like snow on a hot day for everyone in the world.
Tortured in body, nothing to look forward to in Heaven, some terminally ill spend any amount of money for a few more Earth days. Bound to time, they do everything they can to anchor to it so the storm of death won’t sweep them away. How tragic to love time life that much and not be overwhelmed with the thought of an eternal day with Jesus, to seek it diligently! No matter their plans and determination, no matter how many times they vow they will never give in to death, they will bow to it one day.
The Soul That Sins Will Die
The soul that sinneth, it shall die (Ezekiel 18:20). That soul entering eternal night will know a living death. Tortured, existing in an eternity of darkness, despair and torment, the soul can never die. Sin separated that soul from God. But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear (Isaiah 59:2).
The Lord Jesus came to reconcile mankind back to God, to cleanse of sin all who would accept Him so His face would no longer be hidden from them. He is reaching out to you. If you are not ready for eternal day, you tread on dangerous ground.
How sure are you that the rest of your eternity will be endless day and not endless night? How will you know if you are ready to meet your Lord? What would be your reaction should you receive the news that you have but a short while to live? Would you spend your time praying to make sure you are really ready, or would you spend it in helping others into the fold before you left? Would you call your loved ones—or that neighbor who was kind to you—and warn them? Would you be pressed to do everything you could for the Lord in the remaining time? Would you move fast?
If you’re ready for eternity, why not work now, use your remaining time to bring souls into the fold? Every day be sure you are ready; make sure, stay sure, and work for the Lord. Live a sure life for Jesus. Eternity with everlasting joy and peace bubbling on the inside of you is sure.
The Lord Jesus came to join us to the eternal day of God, the eternity with God in it. If you are battling through this long, long night of time, know that soon it will be over for the children of God.
Anyone Can Backslide
Jesus brought home the relationship between death and eternal life. The Lord’s sheep hear His voice and follow Him on the path to eternal day, into that wonderful, glorious sunrise of God’s Heaven. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand (John 10:27,28).
God has given His children eternal life with Him. They will never perish, and no one can pluck them out of His hand. Some people use this scripture to claim a person cannot backslide. This isn’t what the Lord was talking about at all. Anyone can backslide. Self is the only one to decide whether to serve the Lord or to go the way of the world. But if you decide to keep the Lord in your heart, neither man nor the devil can take Him out. No one can pluck you out of the hand of God but you, yourself. Only you can break the seal of the Holy Spirit on your soul. The devil can’t break it, only the person who owns the soul.
Jesus told us of our security, but it’s conditional security. Many teach and believe in a lie of the devil: unconditional eternal security. Your security with God is conditional.
Jesus Gives Life to the Dead
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this (John 11:25,26)? When Jesus said he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live, He was talking about the body, for the soul can never die. Jesus gives life to the dead, even to dead bodies. He is the life giver who will resurrect all dead bodies. He is life, and in Him is no death for the children of God.
We learn in the following verse that the soul is separate from the body: Them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord (I Thessalonians 4:14-17). Jesus will bring the souls of our saved loved ones with Him. Their bodies will be brought out of their graves and reunited with their souls in the air.
Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed (I Corinthians 15:51,52). What great action will take place: the Bride of Christ changed and the dead in Christ raised!
But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me (Psalm 49:15). Jesus, remember, is coming in midair, and the bodies of those who have died in the Lord will be redeemed from their graves. The Psalmist knew about this through the Holy Spirit.
We’re pilgrims and strangers headed for eternity, rejoicing. Those without the reality of eternity don’t understand the joy we feel as we await that great new dawn.
How Can These Things Be?
Imagine how Lazarus’ sisters felt when he died. With loving care, Mary and Martha had placed the body of their brother in the grave. Although the sisters knew Jesus’ power was greater than death, they just didn’t think this was the appointed time for Jesus to display resurrection power. They knew He was the resurrection and life, but the Lord had to enlarge their frame of reference from Earth time into the timelessness of eternity. Jesus wanted them to know that if they believed on Him, the resurrection would be immediate. He would bring their brother out of the grave.
Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God (John 11:40)? The sisers in that moment placed all their faith in Jesus. It was Whatever you say, Lord. I believe in that moment they were like the mother of Jesus when she was visited by the angel, the virgin who asked, How shall this be…? And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word (Luke 1:34,38). The sisters of Lazarus knew if Jesus said it, it would be done. Never in the past had they heard Him say something that had not happened. He commanded the blind to see, and they received sight. He said to the crippled, Walk! and they walked. Leprosy, leave the body! and the body was made whole. To the winds He said, Peace, be still! and the storm had no more power. His power was greater.
Now Jesus cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go (John 11:43,44). It was a fantastic display of miracle power, and it shook the community.
Look to the Blessed Hope
The blessed hope of the Resurrection is a great comfort when you are burying a loved one who has died in the Lord. You know you will see that loved one again. Realize that one is not in the body of clay but has already moved into eternal day. The sunrise of eternity came, and your loved one stepped into everything wonderful. That body was just a house of clay that gave trouble, pain. But no more. You plant that loved one’s body in the ground, knowing one day a new body will come forth that will live like the soul and never die.
I love to dwell on God’s eternal plan. It’s wonderful—our hope, our faith—and it should be our outlook on life. The Lord came to Earth to bring that plan to us; it belongs to us. Instead of looking at tombstones and undertakers, look to the blessed hope of that eternal morn. As the song says, you won’t have to cross Jordan alone. Why? Jesus will be their waiting to take you across.
Jesus made death not the end of your road but the beginning. Don’t you know, Child of God, that death is the beginning when you start to really live? Although you have eternal life in your soul, that body, that mind may be giving you trouble. You’re battling the darkness of the enemy. But, thank God, when the sunrise of that eternal morning comes for you, the battle will be over, no more shadows, darkness and tears. You’re crossing Jordan, and you don’t mind it at all. You’re busy talking to Jesus. He’s helping you across, the one who conquered death for you. You could only die in this space of time, but He made it possible for you to live for all eternity. He is your life now and eternally. How wonderful indeed!
Have you ever watched a beautiful sunrise? It’s saying that God has given you one more day—or at least a part of a day. You are seeing the sunrise in your space of time. But to personally experience that glorious eternal sunrise, to look through the eyes of God as you step into your eternal day will be a thrill beyond words. You will look and look, but see no end. Maybe the loved ones you’ve left behind will try to muffle their cries, but you have entered a magnificent new life, brilliant with the sunrise of Jesus. You wonder why the tears, why the sorrow. Why aren’t they rejoicing with you? You are with the Lord, but time still holds them hostage.
Your Soul Will Never Die
And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this (John 11:26)? Why worry about death if you will never die when you have the lifegiver, the life of Jesus inside? The body will die, but you don’t want to keep that body after age has rendered it helpless. Think what condition the body would be in if you lived to be one hundred fifty! But to have a body that will live on and on, glorified, strong and healthy, will be wonderful beyond words. You reach out and put your hands together, glorified hands that last forever. The legs will always be young and give you service. These feet will work for eternity. In God’s endless day, you will never have a nervous breakdown nor a tumor, heart trouble or cancer. You left pain and disease behind in the period called time, the period you once held onto with such vigor.
You thought time was greater than eternity; but when that eternal sunrise comes, you who are born new will find everything the Lord told you in His Book was true. You just wouldn’t let it become real to you. Leaving time seemed like the end of everything.
Jesus Conquered Death
There is victory for the body. All hell can’t keep it in the grave. The devil himself and all his demons could surround the grave of a saint of God and still be unable to trap the body in the grave on that Resurrection Morn.
So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory (I Corinthians 15:54,55)? Jesus, remember, in the period of time He lived conquered death. No obituary for the child of God in that eternal day; just life. No heartache; just peace, contentment.
The Lord loves you. His love is great beyond understanding. Let the reality of His love sink deep into your heart and mind. Don’t question His love; know that He loved you so much He died for you. Because of Jesus, death is swallowed up in victory. The devil has nothing that can touch the glorified body.
I’m glad Jesus came and conquered that monster called death. I despise death; I hate it. It’s the last enemy the Lord will destroy for us. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:14). One of these days God will have the last word with the devil and cast him into the lake of fire along with death and hell. Jesus had the victory over death when He called Lazarus, come forth!
If the Lord can call one man out of the grave, He can call out any number. In this period called time, He has proven Himself to be victorious over death, over the grave. Thank God for Jesus! Because He lives, we live. Because He lives, our loved ones who have died in Him live. Because He conquered death, the bodies of our loved ones in the graves are coming out one day.
Why let the devil worry you? Why let him spin you around like a top? You see the same thing each revolution: fear. Some of you are on the devil’s merry-go-round. It’s not merry, but it certainly goes around. Your outlook on life is always the same; you don’t change. You are just as depressed on Sunday as you were last Monday, carrying around your depression, hugging it to you. If you don’t want it, get rid of it. It’s garbage. Dump it out like you would dump out your garbage at home. Put no value on it. The devil would like you to treasure your depression, for he knows it will stand between you and receiving deliverance from God.
The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever (Psalm 22:26). The Psalmist had insight given to him by the Lord into eternal life.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever (Psalm 23:6). The house of the Lord is the eternal house of God. In Heaven you will not dwell in a time dimension the way you did on Earth. Forever is eternity.
The LORD knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever (Psalm 37:18). Our inheritance in Heaven is forever, but inheritances received on Earth are fleeting. What you don’t use of your time inheritance, someone else will. Time is a robber that will eventually steal everything you have worked for on Earth. However, that which you have sent up ahead of you to Heaven, time cannot destroy. It has gone into that glorious eternal day. Some have laid up much treasure in Heaven, sending it ahead. Others send nothing. Their treasures are all tied up in time; they live as though they were staying in time forever.
Passed from Death into Life
The Lord, not man, is the one who has the say over death, over life. Man can blaspheme His name, insult his God in every way, but in the end, God has the last word.
God loved the world so much, remember, that He gave Jesus so we would have everlasting life. But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life (John 4:14). Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life (John 5:24). Believe God’s Word, believe the One who sent Jesus; and you will pass from death unto life. You have eternal life in Heaven for the soul if you have Jesus.
Will You Accept Jesus?
Oh sinner, you can join us; and you can be born new. The Lord sent me to invite all sinners into the Kingdom. He sent me with His message of eternal day for you. Will you accept Him and leave all troubles behind one day? Will you accept Him and live with Him for eternity? That’s how long He embraces each born-new person who is true to Him. The “old you” is not fit for eternal day. God has done His best to be gracious to the old you, the old you living a sinful life.
If you accept Jesus, that eternal day is yours; but you must follow Him the rest of the way. You may have but a day or two of time left, a week. Some reading this will be gone before next week ends. Think of it. It may be you leaving this period called time to enter one of two places, Heaven or hell, eternal bliss or eternal torment, eternal light or eternal damnation. You will enter all the greatness of the Lord or else all the tortures of hell—the judgment and curse of God. One place or another will be yours for all eternity. Only the children of God will live in eternal day—all because of Jesus. He came all the way from Heaven to join our short space called time with His vast eternal day. Jesus is our bridge from time into eternal bliss. How simple He made it for us! The invitation now is whosoever will, let him come. On tomorrow, time may cease for you.
Why is He so gracious to the sinner? God remembers Calvary. His Son hung between you and eternal death. The Son is saying, Father, for my sake, wait a little longer. Give that soul some more time, for my sake. Father, see the nail prints. Remember Calvary! For my sake, Father, give that one just a little more time. Then when the sinner comes to repent, Jesus is saying, Father, for my sake forgive that one. For my sake wash away all of the sins. For my sake, make that one a new creation, and it happens.
Eternity…everyone can be in that eternity of bliss, happiness and greatness of God as the endless ages roll. If you don’t have Jesus in your heart, won’t you come to Him now? Pray this prayer with me: Oh, God, save my soul. I’m so sorry that I sinned against you, but I have come home. I’m going to serve you, Lord, the rest of my life. I believe the blood of Jesus washes away all of my sins, all of my sins. Come on in Jesus! If you meant that prayer you can now say, Hallelujah, He has come! Hallelujah, He is mine!
Do You Need Healing?
You who are sick and afflicted, believe God to get you well as I pray for you. I am not the healer; I am the Lord’s believer in His healing. Multitudes have been healed as the Lord flowed His Spirit through this vessel of clay. Lord, I bring them, the blind, the crippled, the heart patients, the cancer patients, the diabetics, those who are in need of any kind of healing. I bring them all to you, the little disabled one, those who have just part of a brain, those who will never walk without your miracle. I bring them. In the name of Jesus it comes, from your supernatural gift of miracles and healings. In the name of your Son Jesus, heal! In the holy name of the Lord, heal! In the mighty, mighty name of Jesus, heal!
The healing power is flowing into the bodies of those who yield to it. It will linger night and day to get you well if you will allow it. Watch all improvements daily. Then write and tell me about them so I can rejoice with you.
Back to our starting scripture, I John 5:11, And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Without God’s Son, an eternal night of torment awaits. Eternal day, wonderful existence is through Jesus. Without His Son, an eternal night of torment awaits. Eternal bliss, eternal joy, eternal grace, eternal everything good is for those who accept Him. He lives on the inside of all who love and serve Him. As Paul said, Nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me (Galatians 2:20). Thank God for Jesus, for the power of His love, for His grace! Thank God for the opportunity to be with Him as the eternal ages roll! Plan to be there. See you in God’s eternal day of peace, love, joy and happiness.
