Despise Not the Day of Small Things
by Ernest Angley
June 2012
God is a loving, heavenly Father who does so much for each one of His true children. He blesses them in both big and small ways, but do you really take note of each small blessing? The Bible says, For who hath despised the day of small things (Zechariah 4:10)? If you’re a child of God today, you may think the Lord isn’t moving for you when He’s actually working day and night for you.
If you count your troubles at the end of the day, don’t ever do it again. Instead, count your blessings one by one, and you’ll see all that the Lord has done for you. He wants you to realize that He’s watching over you more than any mother, father, brother, sister or close friend ever could. Nobody has ever loved you like Jesus loves you, and nobody has ever cared for you like He cares.
Study the Old Testament, and you’ll see that God always considered the small things; and Jesus took note of the small things when He was here. I always thank the Lord not only for big blessings but also for little ones, and so must you. All the little blessings add up, and soon you’ll be surprised to see that you have a big mountain of blessings. Then you can sing praises unto the Lord and thank Him for that mountain.
The Bible says, Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord (Ephesians 5:19). The Lord loves to hear our praises. They sound greater to Him than the singing of angels because we have been redeemed through the blood of the Lamb, and the angels have not. The Lord loves our blood voices.
God Uses Small Things
Search the Bible for the many times that God used small things to bring about great results. Jesus, our Savior, was born into one of the smallest towns. But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he [Jesus] come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting (Micah 5:2).
Don’t look at how things appear; look at what God can do with those things and know that He will move. If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth (Mark 9:23). Always remember that God can make little things great and weak things strong. A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I the LORD will hasten it in his time (Isaiah 60:22).
God chose Saul from the smallest tribe to be the first king of Israel. And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me (I Samuel 9:21)? When Samuel told Saul that he was going to be king, Saul was so humble that he hid himself; but he didn’t keep that humble spirit. He failed God in so many ways that later God told him, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel (I Samuel 15:17)? Always remember the time when you first received salvation and the Holy Ghost baptism—you felt so little, humble and meek before God; and you must always stay that way.
Ignore the Devil’s Big Show
When Elijah was on the mount waiting for the Lord to manifest Himself, he didn’t need to look for big things. And he [God] said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD (I Kings 19:11). God doesn’t need to put on a big show to prove Himself, but the devil deceives many people by enticing them with all kinds of unbelievable things. But the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice (I Kings 19:11,12). Elijah was used to talking to God, and he recognized God speaking in that still, small voice.
God doesn’t have to thunder like a great storm or roar like a wild animal. The Bible says, Be still, and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10). When God does speak, it’s always the truth. He said, For I am the LORD: I will speak, and the word that I shall speak shall come to pass (Ezekiel 12:25).
The devil’s big shows are not the work of God, but they may scare you for the moment just as Jezebel scared Elijah after he had slain 450 prophets of Baal. And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time. And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness…And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat (I Kings 19:1-5). Although Elijah ran, the Lord was still with him; and He’ll never give up on you either. Fear may take you over for the moment, and you may run for a little bit; but when you stop, the angel of the Lord will be there to strengthen you.
God Used Gideon
Gideon was a success for God because he was obedient in the small things. God chose Gideon for a special mission; but Gideon didn’t consider himself to be much, and he said, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house. And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man (Judges 6:15,16). Gideon had such humility. He may have been considered small in the eyes of the world, but he was big in the eyes of the Lord.
At first, Gideon was focused on big things; and he put together an army of 32,000 men. Then the Lord said, Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me. Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand (Judges 7:2,3).I’m sure Gideon was afraid when 22,000 men turned back, but he didn’t let it defeat him.
Are you afraid of anything today? For some, fear is your worst enemy. It hinders your prayer life, your fasting life and your Bible study. Fear is crippling and destructive, and it comes from the devil. He wants you to be afraid, and he’ll do everything he can to scare you out of doing the work of God.
It’s good that Gideon kept his eyes on God because the Lord wasn’t finished yet. And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there…So he [Gideon] brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink. And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water. And the LORD said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place (Judges 7:4-7). Gideon had only 300 men left, and he must have taken a step back to catch his breath; but he continued to obey God.
And he [Gideon] divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man’s hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers. And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do. When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon. So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands. And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon. And they stood every man in his place round about the camp; and all the host ran, and cried, and fled. And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the LORD set every man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host (Judges 7:16-22). Despise not the day of small things. Gideon’s 300 won; and today, the Bride of Christ will be winners just like that 300. Always remember that God only needs small things to bring about great miracles.
God Makes Small Things Prosper
Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you (Matthew 17:20). Jesus used the mustard seed as an example because He knew it was the smallest of any seed on Earth.
At another time, Jesus said, It [the Kingdom of God] is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth: But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it (Mark 4:31,32). The Lord doesn’t want us to overlook things even as small as a mustard seed.
The Lord is God over the big things and the small things. He makes small things come to life and prosper just like He makes one little acorn grow into a big, sturdy oak tree.
The Gospel of Mark tells us about the widow’s mite. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing (Mark 12:42). The Lord didn’t make an example out of someone who gave a half a million dollars; He chose a woman who gave a very small amount so He could teach us not to despise the day of small things.
And he [Jesus] called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living (Mark 12:43,44). The widow woman was poor, and she had given all she had; but after her act of love and faith, I’m sure she had more than enough money to not only give to the Lord but also to use for herself.
Don’t fail to count the small things because they really add up with the Lord. Yield to the Holy Spirit, and He’ll bring things to your mind that you would never have considered to be a blessing from Heaven. Things happen to you daily that you may never think to give the Lord credit for because you probably think they just happened, but that’s not true. When you’re walking in God’s divine will, your days are planned by the Lord; and everything will work for your good regardless of how things look in the physical. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28).
God’s Blessings Multiply
Always remember the miracle of the five loaves and two fishes. Jesus wanted to feed a hungry crowd of 5000 people who had followed Him to the mountain, but He didn’t have enough money or food to be able to do that. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him [Jesus], There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten (John 6:8-13).
This was an amazing miracle; and still today, the Lord will feed and protect His true children in many ways. Then we will be able to work for the Lord and help Him make miracles.
On that miracle day, Jesus used a little lad to make a big miracle that’s been told and retold. Why did He use a young boy?—because an adult probably wouldn’t have parted with their basket, but a child’s faith is different. When those little eyes looked at Jesus, I’m sure the boy’s heart leaped with joy; and he didn’t think twice about giving what he had to Jesus.
Notice that at first, Andrew had questioned Jesus about what He had asked the disciples to do; but I don’t believe in questioning God, not even when He visits with me and talks to me as one person talks to another. His presence is so great and overwhelming that I just bow humbly at His feet and listen. I know I’m not there because I’m worthy but because the Lord makes us worthy through His divine blood. The Bible says we were conceived in sin: Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me (Psalm 51:5). But the blood cleanses us and makes us new in truth, righteousness and holiness. That ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness (Ephesians 4:24).
Don’t Rob God
You must count your blessings; but some people would rather complain while others say, “I don’t think God loves me.” That’s a ridiculous statement when God loved us so much that He gave His only Son to die for us. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16).
After such a great sacrifice of love, we should be willing to give anything; yet some people won’t even tithe. God says, Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings (Malachi 3:8). People like that are always wondering why God doesn’t bless them, but it’s a wonder to me that He even lets them live when they steal from God. I don’t have any confidence in people who don’t tithe and give to God. In fact, their salvation can’t even be any good; and the Lord wants to open their eyes and let them know they’re deceived.
If you come and tell me you have lost your job, the first thing I want to know is whether or not you have tithed. If you have, then God will give you another job. Put in your application at different places where you’d like to work; then pray and wait for your phone to ring.
One time, an unsaved man in his seventies who was out of work came to me for help. First, I prayed for his soul, and God gloriously saved him. I prayed again and then told him to go and look for a job without mentioning how old he was. I told him to say with all confidence, “I need a job, and I promise to always give you a good day’s work.” He did exactly that, and a company he visited hired him on the spot.
Sons and daughters of God don’t have to beg or be defeated because they’re wonderfully made. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well (Psalm 139:14).
God Chose David
God sent Samuel to Jesse’s house to anoint one of his sons to be king. Beginning with the oldest, Jesse brought his sons before Samuel one by one; but the Lord kept saying, “Not that one.” When it appeared that Samuel had seen them all, he asked, Are here all thy children? And he [Jesse] said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep (I Samuel 16:11). No one had given David a second thought because he was just a youngster who tended the sheep.
And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward (I Samuel 16:11-13). God had not chosen the oldest, the biggest or the tallest; He had chosen the smallest and the youngest. The Lord anoints children as well as adults.
Young David had that anointing when it came time for him to face Goliath. David was at the battleground only because his father had told him to take some food to his brothers. Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren; And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge (I Samuel 17:17,18).
When David arrived, he heard a voice like the roar of thunder saying, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together (I Samuel 17:10). With the anointing of the Spirit of God upon him, David said, Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God (I Samuel 17:26)? When the men answered, “Nobody will go and face him,” David quickly said, “I’ll go.” Saul was about to get a lesson in despising not the day of small things.
God Uses Faith
When Saul met this “brave soldier,” I’m sure he expected to see a big man; but all he saw was David, a young, freckled-face boy with shining eyes and a slingshot. Saul took one look at him and said, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth (I Samuel 17:33). Think about that scene—there was little David standing before big Saul who was taller than any man among the Israelites and had been chosen to be the first king of Israel; but he had backslidden on God and become a coward. He should have been the one to kill Goliath, but he was scared stiff; and all of the other soldiers were, too.
David had God on his side; and he wasn’t scared when he answered, Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine (I Samuel 17:36,37). This may have seemed like small talk to Saul, but God recognizes small things.
Saul knew that he didn’t have anyone else willing to go; so he said, Go, and the LORD be with thee (I Samuel 17:37). Saul was a big hypocrite. He didn’t want to send that little runt out there; but he knew that if he didn’t, he would have to go himself. Saul didn’t see the same big God David saw.
And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail. And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him (I Samuel 17:38,39). I’m sure young David could hardly move with all of that big, heavy armor on, so he took it off. He was happy just having his slingshot; and God was telling Saul, “Don’t despise small things.”
God Fought for David
And he [David] took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine (I Samuel 17:40). David didn’t choose big rocks; he chose just five small stones, representing J-E-S-U-S, and put them in his shepherd’s bag. Then, with his sling in his hand, he drew near to the Philistine. That big giant was really insulted to see that the Israelites had sent a little boy to fight against him.
And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him (I Samuel 17:41). A man carried a big shield before David; but David had a bigger shield, one that didn’t show up to the naked eye but could only be seen with the eye of faith. Do you look at things through faith? When God tells me to do something, I agree through faith. God said it; I believe it, and that settles it.
And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance. And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field (I Samuel 17:42,44). The devil’s spirit is full of hot air and loves to brag, but he’ll scare you if you listen to him.
Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him (I Samuel 17:45,49,50). David used only what he had in his hand. He didn’t try to use something big or something he wasn’t used to or he never would have killed the Philistine.
David didn’t even have a small sword or a knife; he had only a small slingshot, a little stone and a heart full of God’s love. But there was no sword in the hand of David. Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled (I Samuel 17:50,51). David used Goliath’s own sword to cut off the giant’s head, and the armies of the enemy fled for their lives. God will always be with you when you serve and trust Him with your whole heart.
Beware of Ego
God can conquer through “little” people, but He can’t use “big” people who are full of ego; He leaves them to fight their own battles. God told me that all ego comes from the devil, and I hate it. I give God all the glory for everything He does; I never take any of God’s glory.
No matter how pompous people are, they’re all just little people before God. They don’t have God’s love; and according to the Bible, that makes them nothing, so why should we fear them? Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity [love], I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity [love], I am nothing (I Corinthians 13:1,2).
This is one of my favorite stories about ego that I’m sure you’ll never forget. A Northern bird flying South for the winter stopped by a little pond where he met a big, old frog. Now, this frog had a lot of ego; and he asked the bird, “You look so happy. Where are you going?” The bird answered, “I’m going South for the winter where the sun shines all the time.” The frog wanted to go there, too; but, of course, the bird didn’t have any way to take him. Then the frog had an idea and said, “Earlier, I saw a little girl drop that piece of ribbon lying over there. If you put one end of it in your mouth and I put the other end in my mouth, then you can take me South for the winter.”
The little bird was humble and full of God’s love, so he agreed. He was used to keeping his mouth shut; so he put the ribbon in his mouth, and off they went. They were flying high in the sky when somebody looked up and said, “Look at that frog and bird up there; I’ve never seen anything like it! I wonder who came up with that idea?” Immediately, the frog thought, “This bird will probably take a different way when we come back, and all of those people down there will think this was his idea.” So before he thought another minute, the frog cried, “I did….” His voice trailed off as down he went, and that was the end of the frog.
People with ego love to talk about all the things they have done. One preacher said, “Why, if the Lord was going to give anybody His gifts, He would give them to me.” I would never have thought such a thing let alone said it. I never would have asked God for even one of His gifts because I didn’t think I was worthy to receive any of them. I thought I was really blessed to have received the gift of the Holy Ghost. God Himself had to tell me, “You’ll go on a long fast; and when you come out of that fast, you’ll have my gift for the healing of the people.” That was the beginning of this great Jesus ministry.
A Special Baby
When Moses was born, Pharaoh had declared that all Hebrew baby boys would be killed. And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months. And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river’s brink (Exodus 2:1-3). Moses was just a little baby, but God had big plans for him. Moses’ mother had a heart so full of God’s love that she knew God would watch out for her son…but she didn’t know that in the little basket was the destiny of the Israelite people, the great plan of God.
And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him. And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river’s side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it. And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews’ children. Then said his sister to Pharaoh’s daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee? And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child’s mother. And Pharaoh’s daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it (Exodus 2:4-9). God works in miraculous ways! Moses’ own mother was able to be his nursemaid and to raise him, and I’m sure she taught him about the living God.
And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses (Exodus 2:10). God took care of baby Moses; and later, He used him to deliver the entire Israelite nation from Egyptian bondage. When God can have His way in a baby’s life like that, He can make that baby into a strong and mighty force for the Lord.
God can make a great plan from something very small, and He’s looking for people who will give Him just a tiny something to work with. Jesus taught the disciples to help Him make miracles, and He needs us to help Him make miracles, too. We must never hinder Him with unbelief. The Lord takes care of everything when you believe Him and follow His plan.
God’s Ways Are Simple
God is a very big God, and He doesn’t have to put on any airs or boast about the things He has done. He said if we’ll do something simple, He’ll do something wise. God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty (I Corinthians 1:27). People who don’t understand God think His ways are foolish when in reality, His ways are simple; and He chooses them on purpose to confound the wise. The greatest sermon ever preached, the Sermon on the Mount, was given by Jesus in such simplicity.
When the walls of Jericho needed to come down, God’s instructions for the Israelites were simple. And the LORD said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour. And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days. And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams’ horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets. And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him (Joshua 6:2-5).
Although God’s instructions were simple, they had to be followed exactly. And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout (Joshua 6:10). God’s message to us today is, “If you do something little, I’ll do something big. If you do something foolish, I’ll do something wise.” Never despise the small things.
Recognize the Hand of God
In Elijah’s day, there had been no rain in the land for three years; but when God was about to move, Elijah asked his servant to do just a simple thing. And [Elijah] said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times. [Seven is God’s perfect number.] And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down that the rain stop thee not. And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain (I Kings 18:43-45). I’m sure Elijah’s servant hated to tell his beloved master the cloud was so tiny that it couldn’t possibly have any rain in it, but Elijah saw God in that cloud.
Don’t despise the day of small things. When you see a hand moving that only seems to be the size of a man’s hand, know that it’s the hand of Jehovah God. When He lifts His hand, it’s not as big as a mountain; it’s the size of yours and mine, yet His hand moves the whole world.
You don’t always have to look for big things. Just wait on the Lord and look for every sign, whether it’s big or small, and know that tiny signs will be magnified through the anointings of God. Nothing is too hard for the Lord. Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me (Jeremiah 32:27)? The answer is, “No.”
The Word Is Not Foolish
Today, ministers and churches all over the world are failing God; and I know it grieves Him. Most churches no longer have services on Sunday nights; and if they do, it’s just a little social gathering. You won’t find anything of God in it that will do you any good. The church where I got saved had its biggest crowds on Sunday nights. Why?—because the people were on fire for God. It’s so sad that the fire is missing in most churches today.
So many people think studying the Word is foolishness, but it must be our life. The Bible says, Man [and woman] shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4). You have to pay attention to every word in the Bible because every one is given with power. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little (Isaiah 28:10). The Lord can only teach us small amounts at a time because our minds are so tiny in comparison to His great mastermind; but as we hear little bits from Him, we begin to develop in the Lord.
You must want the Word more than you want your own theories or those of anyone else. The Lord is truth. For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar (Romans 3:3,4). I live by this scripture.
Heed the Gospel of Truth
There are those who think the preaching of the truth is foolishness, and they think we’re foolish for believing it. For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God (I Corinthians 1:18). Many people pay no attention to the Gospel because they think they’re so intelligent and know so much, but the Bible says to beware of them. And if any man think that he knoweth anything, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know (I Corinthians 8:2). When people like that are dying, they’ll wish they had our ticket to Heaven.
Some despise the teachings of the Cross because they don’t want a bloody religion, but the Bible says there is no forgiveness without the shedding of blood. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission (Hebrews 9:22). Those who don’t believe this are full of sin.
For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe (I Corinthians 1:21). God chose that which was insignificant to the minds of mankind to save people. The preaching of the Gospel is a small thing to many, and they don’t want any part of it; but Paul preached the truth no matter what others thought because he knew he couldn’t win with the world. But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness (I Corinthians 1:23).
Many said Peter and John were unlearned and uneducated, but no one could say that about Paul. He was very well-educated and held one of the highest seats in the court of his people, so many criticized him by saying he was mad from much learning. Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad (Acts 26:24). Again, I say to despise not the day of small things.
Beware of Tongue Trouble
Now, I want you to consider your tongue—one of the smallest members of your body. The Lord loves a holy tongue, and that’s one thing you receive when you get saved. The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth (Proverbs 10:20). God can’t direct those who don’t have a holy tongue. Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body (James 3:3).
If the Lord doesn’t have your tongue, He can’t turn you in the direction He wants you to go. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth (James 3:4,5)!
Don’t boast about yourself as some so-called Christians do. In fact, you shouldn’t even boast about what you’re going to do tomorrow because tomorrow will only come for you if the Lord wills it to. Ye that say, Today or tomorrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil (James 4:13-16).
The Bible says the tongue is like a fire. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell (James 3:6). There are two kinds of fire—the fire of God and the fire of the devil—and you must make sure that your tongue is ruled by the divine fire of the Holy Ghost.
Mind Your Own Business
Some people love knowing all they can about others, but they don’t love knowing the truth. God despises an evil tongue or a tongue that gossips; and He warns that if you don’t have control over your tongue, you have no salvation. If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain (James 1:26).
You’ll never get into Heaven with a tongue that gossips because it defiles your soul, mind and body. There are different kinds of lust; and one kind burns within people’s tongues and causes them to talk about others, to tattle and to be busybodies.
Mind your own business, and let the Lord take care of the devouring fire. We must use only the fire of love, peace and faith, not the fire of judgment or condemnation. The Lord didn’t send us forth to condemn or judge people. He said, Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again (Matthew 7:1,2).
The way you judge other people is the way God will judge you, and the way you forgive others is the way He will forgive you. For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses (Matthew 6:14,15). With God’s forgiving spirit, you won’t hold grudges or have any bitterness; you’ll leave everything in the hands of God.
You must be beyond the devil’s foolish notions of carrying a grudge or having bitterness in your heart. You have just one heart, and it must be filled with the love and the grace of God; they’re more than enough. My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness (II Corinthians 12:9).
Go Beyond
God’s children may seem small and weak in the eyes of the world, but they’re great in the eyes of God; and He wants to take them deeper into His greatness, His divine will and all the energy and power of the Holy Spirit. Remember, the Church was started by only a few when compared to the number of people there were in the area at that time, but God used those few in great ways. They went beyond self, friends and loved ones and on into the greatness of the Lord. The fire of the Holy Ghost came upon them; and divine love, peace and fire from On High became a part of them.
Most of those in the Early Church weren’t important or educated people, but they were ready to be used. They were ready to stand up against the devil no matter what, ready to heal the sick and cast out devils. They had the compassion, the power and the greatness of God; and they knew His promises were true because they had found the true Savior and Redeemer of whom Isaiah had said, His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).
God Needs You
We’re not the ones who are to be doing the living; Christ must live in us. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me (Galatians 2:20). Paul also said we must be complete in Christ Jesus. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power (Colossians 2:10). There’s nothing like being complete in the Lord; and when you are, God needs you no matter how big or small you are or how important you may or may not be.
As long as you’re wearing the whole armor of God, you’re ready to do battle for the Lord. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:13-17).
It’s time for you to wear this armor every day so you can face your enemy—the devil and his demons—without fear. God’s children must be like a mighty army that the devil and his kingdom fear. Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners (Song of Solomon 6:10)? This is the Bride of Christ. She’s carrying the bloodstained banner and trampling devils underfoot. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you (Luke 10:19).
There’s no time to be beaten down by the devil or to be in valleys where you can’t bless and help people. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:4-6). It’s time to stand up in the faith and righteousness of God and to sit in heavenly places with Him.
Serve Divinity
The Lord said, And I sought for a man (Ezekiel 22:30). God doesn’t need you to do big and mighty things; He just needs you to be full of His eternal, blood love, the love that Jesus brought down from Heaven. He needs the Holy Spirit to be able to flow that love out of you and to others at any time. Jesus said, He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water (John 7:38). The Holy Ghost is the one who flows the love of God into our hearts and minds in the first place. The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us (Romans 5:5). Where does He get that love—from our souls.
We must serve divine love to the people of the world and tell them that God will be their everything; He won’t turn them away. God needs people who will introduce others to Jesus Christ and who will take hope to those who have never had any.
Then we must tell people about His miracles, knowing they can be made whole just as the ten lepers were. And as he [Jesus] entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed (Luke 17:12-14).
God needs a person who believes that what He did yesterday, He will do today. If you can really say, “I believe in miracles because I believe in God,” then the Lord needs you to say, “Mother, bring your little, blind boy to Jesus, and He will heal him. It’s not God’s will for him to be blind!” If she cries, “But I have no money,” the Lord needs you to say, “The gifts of God are free.”
God needs people who will use His hope and faith and who will use His strength like Samson did to defeat the enemies of God. He needs people who will treasure His anointing, knowing that it breaks all of the yokes. The yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing (Isaiah 10:27).
God needs people who will believe every promise in His Word and who know that His Word is infallible. He needs people who will use the Word of God to conquer for the Lord and to deliver people from darkness into the light of the truth so they can be free. You can’t be afraid to use the Word for with God all things are possible (Mark 10:27).
God needs people who will believe in the power of prayer and Bible fasting. Jesus said, This kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21). Prayer is such a simple thing when you really love the Lord, but it brings great results. It will make you a mighty witness, and the Lord needs you to be a blessing like Abraham was. Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing (Genesis 12:1,2).
Are You Ready to Be Used?
Don’t ever think you’re not important enough, smart enough or worthy enough to be used by God. Despise not the day of small things. God can’t use those who think they’re something special within themselves. He needs those who will allow Him to make them into what He wants them to be. All that matters is being blood-washed, living in the blood, being filled with Holy Ghost fire from On High and yielding completely to God.
Jesus said, Follow thou me (John 21:22). To follow Him means you will find those who need Jesus and the blood that stained the Old Rugged Cross. The Lord wants to be able to turn to you and say, “I need you here,” or “I need you there. I have work for you to do today.”
The Spirit is calling us for daily service because there are so many people who need to be reached in this final hour, people who need someone to inspire and encourage them and to tell them that Jesus loves them. Are you ready to do battle for the Lord? Are you ready to help someone who sees no way out or to tell the sick and afflicted that the God of miracles lives?
In this great, final hour, God needs humble people who will stand in their place with Him; and there’s a special place in the body of Christ for each one of us. For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him (I Corinthians 12:14-18).
Not everyone can be an ear or an eye, but we all have a place; and we must take that place so His Gospel message of love can go to the world. Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15).
Come to Jesus
Salvation is an individual experience; He calls people to be saved one by one. There may be a million people being called at one time, but God deals with each person as an individual. If you’re unsaved today, the finger of God is pointing right at you saying, “I need you. You must have my love and grace in abundance and know how to use them. I’m waiting for you.”
Sinner and Backslider, God wants to do a big thing and save your soul; but He needs you to do a simple thing and say this prayer from your heart. Oh, God, save my soul. I’m so sorry I sinned against you; but I’ve come home, and I’m going to serve you, Lord, for the rest of my life. I believe the blood of Jesus washes away all of my sins. Come into my heart, Jesus. Come on in! Now, you’re experiencing the divine blood. Accept that blood, and it will wash away all of your sins.
Be Made Whole
If you have accepted the blood, now you’re free; and you can be healed. I’m not a healer; I’m the Lord’s believer, and I believe in the power of prayer. God has healed multitudes as He has used this humble servant to pray the prayer of faith and deliverance. I use God’s blood faith and blood love, and they work. You may have cancer, heart trouble, diabetes or even AIDS. You may be crippled or paralyzed, but you can be set free because the miraculous Christ still lives today.
Lord, I bring the sick and afflicted to you. I’m humbly grateful that you chose me to bring the lame, the blind, the deaf and the hopeless ones to you for healing. Lay a healing hand on the people today! Heal their little ones and make them well. Heal the people of all manner of sicknesses and diseases. Heal! in the mighty name of Jesus. Heal! The healing power is flowing, so watch yourself and your little ones get well. Then write and tell me about your miracle.
Remember, the promises of God are all true; He keeps every one of them. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you (John 15:7).
